    26 KB There's a cartoon series based off this? Anonymous 05/01/10(Sat)22:46 No.34235433
So a friend recommended this book to me without telling me much other than it was a good story. I go out and buy it and enjoy it enough to go pick up the next book in the series called The sigh of haruhi suzimiya. Then I come to find out there's a cartoon version of the book series. So is the cartoon series just as good as the book series?
    >> Anonymous 05/01/10(Sat)22:47 No.34235462

The point of this post is to get 3/4s of /a/ to rage, even though I've said this they will still more than likely rage anyway, despite the fact that you're an incredibly obvious troll.

    Good day, sir.

If you're talking about the Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya-chan, yeah. It's official but not canon.

I wouldn't particularly recommend getting it UNLESS you understand the Japanese references since most of its humor comes from their culture.

What? I just came here because my friend is always here. He's the one that recommended this book series to me. I like the story so far but he didn't tell me there was a cartoon shoe based off this because he said I might he been turned off by that. If there is one I'd like to check it out if its any good.
    >>34235561
Well I figured that the books were set in Japan because of the names. Should the cultural differences be a real factor?

Here, you can read rest of the novels: http://www.mediafire.com/?dw5thnnzdwz

For me, the story is better in the books. The anime doesn't really add anything I liked except Kyon's voice (in Japanese). There are some differences so you could watch it just to see how they adapted it. Haruhi seems much more annoying to me in the anime, but some people think she's worse in the books so it's just a matter of opinion.

No, it's a fan translation. The translation is fine, and it's better than waiting years for the rest of the story. Book 10 is coming out soon, and will probably be translated a lot faster than the rest, so you should catch up by then. Seriously, it's not worth waiting years just to find out what happens. The story gets more interesting after book 4.

Anyway, you don't need to buy it unless you already watched it and liked it. The studio got money from the American distributor for the licensing fee, but they only make a tiny bit off of sales after that initial amount. Most of your money would just go to paying for more dubs, not original content. Buying the books as they come out is a better way to support the original author.

Japanese people got to watch it for free on tv before deciding whether or not they wanted to buy the DVDs. By downloading it, that's all you're doing. Seriously, if you buy the English DVD, only a few pennies go to the studio that made it. All you would be doing is paying the American voice actors who did the dub (which isn't that good) and the American distributor that makes money off of shows it didn't make. The only reason to support the American anime industry is if you really, really like dubs. If you feel so conscientious that you absolutely must pay the studio, just watch the downloaded version and buy the Japanese DVD for collection purposes.

So, whatever became of the first chapter of book 10? I know it was uploaded last night, but did we ever get a summary of it?

Maybe, I didn't think I'd cause everyone here to turn on me because I want to buy it on dvd. Either way I'm going to find my own way to watch the show and if I enjoy it I'll talk to my friend about it.

I actually bought Melancholy and Sighs from my Waldenbooks for like $5 a piece around X-mas. I finished Melancholy but I haven't started Sighs on account of both the books being on my bookshelf at home.

Thank you! I didn't think I was getting through to anyone. It's never been an obligation for me to buy anything that is available on dvd or any other form of media for that matter. I mean I wonder if this is how people would react about something else entirely different. I mean I'm a big Beatles fan, I own the CDs and the Parlophone records (those are the original UK ones, the american ones were done by capitol records). I'm pretty sure there is a way to download them off the net but I don't. I mean I'm a big fan of the beatles and I'm willing to buy the CDs and records instead of downloading them off the net. That's how I feel about this book series, I'm a fan now so I really don't mind spending money on this stuff.
