I hear that manga is somewhat acceptable. Anime much less so. I'd advise mentioning only manga if you are probed about your interests, and even then act as if you are newer to it that you actually are. Try to think of a reason for learning Japanese that will flatter the locals and not appear too trivial.

That's not true at all. Japan is exceedingly xenophobic, but it's not usually expressed openly. Nobody is going to spit on you or yell at you for being a foreigner. Instead, they'll look you straight in the eye and smile when they tell you you're not eligibile to rent two out of every three apartments because foreigners aren't allowed.

Just because people are nice to you doesn't mean they like you. Japan has a very different, very passive-aggressive way of expressing xenophobia than we do in the west.

Seconded. You can't be a citizen of Japan unless your family has lived there for a certain number of generations. You can visit, but you can't legally live there permanently. If you were to marry a local and have a child inside japan's borders, that child still would not be considered a citizen.

It's fact that manga is just a common media as TV, Film and Books in Japan, if not more so.They're read in trains on the way to work/school, on lunch breaks, in coffee shops, etc. They're so common they sell for dirt cheap. You can find books just left on tables in shops and on the site of streets.

Anime is >usualy< either aimed at children/tweens or the hardcore fanbase and airs at 1am-4am.

"...Far from being looked down on, the manga is seen as a medium in it's own right that can convery information of any kind....."

I'm sure you've all heard someone call your favorite anime a dvd commercial right? Well, technically it is.

Yes it is. Manga is respected art form and media here and they englobe all sorts of demography, even the housewives, salarymen, old geezers and else.
Anime...it's a bit more complicated since the anime industry is a bit too otaku-oriented. Normalfags dan find this pointless, stupid disturbing or gross. Or sometime they don't mind, it depends the anime.

Most of japan normalfags sticks to Sazae-san, the cult classic like Doraemon or watching One Piece with their own children. They can acknowledge some classics and culturally important title like Gundam, Eva or the big budget high-class anime for theaters like the one made by Ghibli or Madhouse but that's all.

OP, pick up a ton of Spice and Wolf novels and just read those. S&W is respectable.

You know how anime tends to show Americans as ultra-crazy patriotic cowboys covered in flags?

Do that. Wear a cowboy hat. Go around covered in the stars and stripes, ranting about how awesome America is. You'll probably terrify the Japs.

Hey, what time did Azumanga Daioh air when it was on in Japan? Is it considered an otaku show?

Not if you're awesome and manly.

Wenn du aber fett und häßlich bist, solltest du dich zum Wohle des deutschen Volkes lieber mit einem Sprengstoffgürtel in einer Türkenversammlung zu den 73 jährigen Jungfrauen sprengen.

hah, you ever try walking around south central LA at night? Its not an exaggeration whatsoever to say it is a genuine risk to your life.

London on the other hand, oh no chavs with sticks and broken bottles. Try getting shot for once.

    This.

American cities are far more dangerous.

Try LA, New York, Chicago, Detroit, or Houston and get back to me.

seriously, why the fuck would you bring up anime anyway as discussion material? Have you ever been traveling? You should explore Japan and meet new people, not talk about anime all day. Besides, what were you planning to do? bring that anime junk back to the states? we have internet for that.

Show interest to the people you are talking to, bring a camera and check out some chicks. To hell with anime.
