Just because piracy doesn't rob the producer of the good itself, and instead makes a copy, it is still theft. It is theft of an idea, but let's get down to the rationale.

Normally a producer will sell you something, let's say it's 50 dollars. But you copied his item, and got it for 50 dollars. He just made 0 dollars on his item, instead of 50. He was, by transitive property, robbed of 50 dollars.

Every pirated anime is a potential sale. By pirating an anime you eliminate the potential for a sale, and no profit is generated. "But OP, I only pirate anime I wouldn't normally buy anyways!". That's not true, if the anime was no good, you wouldn't have pirated it. Chances are you pirated some AAA titles recently.

You are literally killing the anime industry.

they are pricing the goods at levels that the average user isn't going to be able to justify. If they want to earn some more cash the anime industry needs to get off its ass and think of some alternative ways to bring in revenue.

While I understand anime doesn't have the volume of many other TV shows on DVD, the price hike is hard to justify.
I've also seldom liked a profession translation. It seems like they either localize too much or don't even bother.

they already have alternative ways. tons of anime is being streamed legally through crunchyroll, hulu, funimation channel, the anime network, youtube, etc. and it's all free. it gets paid through advertising revenue so it's no different than watching something on dvd. also anime prices have declined significantly over the last few years. what used to be $30 for 3 episode singles is now $30-60 for half season / complete box sets.

You would only buy anime if you knew it was good. You can only know if it's good by watching it. The only option for the foreign market to watch anime is through piracy. Hence, piracy generates potential for a sale instead of removing it.

    >By pirating an anime you eliminate the potential for a sale
There was never potential for a sale, because I would never buy any anime that I couldn't pirate first.
In fact, since I would be inclined to buy the DVD's of an anime that I enjoyed when I pirated it, pirating actually creates potential for a sale. So there is now a potential of $50 after the "theft" instead of $0 the creator would have made.
    >That's not true, if the anime was no good, you wouldn't have pirated it.
I have downloaded terrible anime before. Like, really terrible stuff. I don't see your logic here.

    >But since japanese studios don't get money out of sellin subs, only the rights it doesn't matter

This. If Jap studios wanted to actually make money off foreign sales, they'd employ some of these subbing groups to sub for them, then find a local distributor to split the sales with them. Instead they sometimes sell the rights to translate the anime to some shitty American company who does a horrific job on both subbing and dubbing such that the actual fans don't want the product because people who do it for fun do a way fucking better job.

Potential sale is the most stupid thing in the world: you may print as much stuff as you want, and if you don't sell each and every copy of it, blame it on the pirates and force them to give you the money that only you expected to get.

If you have no way to make people buy your stuff, it's your damn fault. I, for one, have noting against buying shit I like.

what? they give a shit about the global market. that's why they've been trying to expand upon it by doing simultaneous streaming and airing of shows in other countries and why they have been more willing to do co-productions with foreign studios over the last several years. also a lot of the companies that distribute anime in other countries are sometimes subsidiaries of japanese companies themselves (see Viz, Bandai Entertainment, Aniplex, Toei, etc.)

I live in Greenland. There are 0 anime distributors here, let alone any stores that sell anime. There's a local store that sells about 10 manga series, but that's it. Therefore, I can not purchase the products locally. Though I could but them off the internet and get them mailed to me, the anime could be crappy and I could have just wasted the $50 on the anime DVD, and the 30$ for shipping it to fucking Greenland.
    >> Anonymous 04/25/10(Sun)16:59 No.33950XXX
The bottom line is that the companies the Japs are selling the rights to the anime to aren't creating a product I would buy. I buy a lot of movies, and when I find a music artist I like I buy the CDs. People don't mind spending money on something they like. If they don't want to spend their money, the product being sold is shit. A supporting fact is the sales on the American version of Cowboy Bebop and the big-name movies (Mononoke, Spirited Away, Ponyo) they actually do a decent job on.

If the companies that are buying rights want to sell their product they're going to have to do a better job.

You are right. Not only that, even the Japs themselves record late-night anime so they can watch it later. Even anime mention that. Most of us don't rewatch series (besides some really good ones) so watching them once is like seeing it on the TV. Also, I think that raw providers could leave the ads in the video, I like some of these.
