Well, if the OP is watching it in season 1 broadcast order it is indeed confusing as hell.

When I watched Haruhi I watched it in chrono order and I mist say, it was really enjoyable. Easily my most favorite anime; enjoyable plot, characters, animation, voice acting, soundtrack... they are all top-notch.

Different from what I was implying. Kyon is not 'new in town'. He is just an unreliable NARRATOR. The information he shares to the audience sometimes differs from what is actually observed. Sometimes he hides information, sometimes he outright denies or clings to them.

Yuki gets a tiny bit more emotional, Haruhi gets a tiny bit less bitchy and more friendly, Kyon gets a tiny bit less bored, Other two character do not change at all over the course of the show. I really don't think you know the meaning of the word subtle, perhaps you meant the word little.

The first series while generic is still pretty entertaining, the only episodes I didn't really like were the island murder mystery episodes. The pacing wasn't horrible it was just normal. If Kyoani knew Haruhi would be a big hit, the first season would probably be book 1 and book 2 instead of certain episodes from the later books. E8 could've ended sooner. It was a good anime but nothing ground breaking. 2006 was so awesome, Haruhi and Mushishi FUCK YEAH!
