That's what I was thinking as I was skimming through the series again. There was nothing wrong with the first half of the series; character introductions, insights into the world, and generally built the series up. Episode 7 was the first hint shit might get real by the end. Episode 8 actually took a step backwards in this regard, and Rio's phone call at the end could definitely have been pushed into another episode.

Ah, no. I don't insist 'lolgrimdark'. I just feel that if the story was a bit more serious, it would be a good show, IMO. I have no problems with it being slice-of-life too, but something is lacking in the show. What I say is plot development. I dunno about you.

Half of the episode explained why the town engages in shady stuff, explains one thing, good, but the latter half was just 'lol emo i haet souljas'. Developing a side character like Seiya who doesn't have a significant role in the story is a waste of air time.

Not trolling, just stating the truth. With its use of stereotypical, predictable characters, it's bound to go that way. However, it failed as otaku pandering shit.

Did we watch the same show?
The focus of the show was on the characters. The plot was only a setting. Like a stage for the characters and their interactions to unfold (and how this changes them to some extent). The very fact that they had the courtesy of still developing a plot to give that show a much more memorable developement overall is what made it so great for me.

That's why it was imperative to have entire episodes dedicated to single characters.

I guess you meant 'nothing happened with the main plot' when you state that 'nothing happened', but as I think about it, the so called 'main plot' wasn't 'main' at all. It was, as already mentioned, only a nice background to show that the world isn't a static setting and to make the whole show a bit more fleshed out.

And let's not forget that the very basic idea of the whole show was 'cute girls hijinks'. If you go from there, the whole show is unbelievably well done. If you try to impose the standards for a Drama it sure has a few weaknesses, but alas, that's just because the wrong frame of reference is used.

At least that's my opinion.
