I came up with "Brain Manga" on the spot because they all felt somehow related but I couldn't quite figure out how. A kind anon replied that the genre is psychological, and each of those are.

What's wrong with Ergo Proxy? It's a solid coming-of-age narrative about self-discovery and whatnot. You either expected it to be an action-filled cyberpunk series or focused on the arbitrary homages. Though many of the references actually had a purpose and made sense in the context of the series.

The reason that a lot of people dislike it is because it was compact and well wrapped up when You already knew and it just felt artificially longer just for the sake of money.

Plus, Light was a very flawed character - he created his own downfall, stemming from his huberis. People tend to like them being 100% Just as Planned (a la Akagi).
