For Mac there's the freeware Simple Comic, which works rather splendidly.

back on windows I used to use some ancient version of ACDsee, like v2.4
for unix, gqview/geeqie is decent

there was this one program that had a "search bar" at the bottom to quickly skim through chapters.. I forgot the name though. anyone know which one i mean??

I'd also be happy about more suggestions.
So far I tried CDisplay (best one for me so far) and MangaReader. That Honeyview thing that was mentioned seems to not run at all on my machine (Either that or, more likely, I'm just too stupid to use it correctly).

Picasa 3 but it fucks up the reading order in which the pictures are displayed. little bitch made me rage.

I've tried quite a few reader programs, like ComicRack, MangaMeeya, HoneyView and some others but in the end they always seem to lack something that CDisplay has that makes CDisplay more usable. Which is why I still use it. Plus it has a minimalist interface done right. The only thing that sucks about it is that there's still no proper Unicode version of it, so I have to run it in AppLocale if I want to read archives/folders with Japanese characters in them. Still, I'll rather do that than settle for less usability.
