  • Kimmo Alm aka "Sysop" from AnT has been spamming us for YEARS now, and has recently stepped it up. This shit has got to fucking stop.
As promised, here are all of the e-mails he has sent me over the years (and my responses).
    ↑ UPDATED March 16th! ↑
One of Kimmo's ex-moderators posted hundreds of PMs. They are absolutely hilarious/terrifying.

The problem with anime-only (or mostly) fans is that they often refuse to read the source material for the shows they watch. That pisses me off, especially when they try to have serious discussions about plot and characters when only a small portion of the story has been animated, like all those Haruhi fans who have never read the novels.

I think light novels could do really well over here if a non-manga publisher licensed a bunch of them and marketed them as young adult novels. As it is now, they get shelved in the manga section and only attract niche fans. I guess they would have to change the cover art and illustrations so as not to scare away people who aren't used to seeing manga-style character designs in their books.

Light novels are trash. Gentlemen read real novels for literature, manga for a more visual medium. Light novels are shit made by "writers" too bad to make proper novels and too lazy to draw manga or too pretentious to get someone to draw for them.

If you've only read translations, then that's probably why. The main difference between light novels and "proper literature" is that the language is more accessible (furigana on uncommon kanji, casual grammar). The subject matter is also usually less serious, but that doesn't mean it's always poor writing. It's a less restricted medium than more formal novels, so it can result in creative storytelling.

With regards to Light Novels, this is a legitimate point. Many, if not most, are basically just written versions of an anime, and not really like a real book. Kind of like a book I saw a few times many many years back; a novelization of the Jurassic Park movie... even though there was already the actual novel the movie was based on. Light Novels are usually closer to that kind of thing than an actual book.

That said there are still a few advantages to consuming something in written form, and you would be a fool to say otherwise. Because of this, I wouldn't say anime is inherently better.

    >> Anonymous 03/23/10(Tue)15:33 No.32473033
The problem with light novels is that there is only the medium of text to present an idea. As the text has to be completely translated to be understood by us (Unless you are able to read Japanese well), the original image the author was going for will end up being mangled. This problem isn't as bad in manga and anime, due to the more universal mediums that they employ alongside the language.
    >> Anonymous 03/23/10(Tue)15:33 No.32473036

Manga is the one medium in which there is the most creativity and artistic value out of the ones listed.
VNs are stupid "Oh my god you saw my panties now you have to fuck me, also, cheap melodrama" pervert-pandering shit, they deserve the tier they're in, and if one is made lower than that, they should go to it.
Light novels are streamlined shit, either to just pander to otaku with crap like Index or whatever or just an excuse for a writer to not have to do the actual work behind script writing. "Hey, someone will eventually adapt these for me, I just have to keep on with my crap writing."
Anime is mostly adaptations. Original anime tends to be quite creative as well, and therefore has its merits.

I agree, light novels are meant for casual entertainment; they aren't striving to be literary masterpieces. I think light novels are usually the equivalent of young adult literature in the West. Compared to manga, with a light novel you can get a more complete story, with a more intricate plot and better developed characters. A good writer has to make up for the lack of visuals on each page by writing interesting exposition. Some LN writers use kanji in a creative way that is completely lost in translation.

The thing about VNs, anime, and manga is that they're doing something you don't see anywhere else to the same degree.

And manga have such high literary value, right? LN are supposed to be written as if it's like an anime or manga. That's what LN are normally in Japan. And LN are still quite a new thing, but it's getting more popular. Also, cool opinion bro.

    >> Jake the Carrot !6kgj/OnyWw 03/23/10(Tue)15:47 No.32473486
LN's are rather enjoyable, IMO. Yeah, some of them are the screenplay in written form, but some of them allow you to get into the heads of the characters better. While anime doesn't allow for lengthy breaks for the character to mull over his thoughts, LN's do. (See: Spice & Wolf, Haruhi)

Furthermore, some novels continue farther than their adaptations ever will. That is, if Tokyopop gets off their asses and hires someone to finish translating the series. I'm looking at you, FMP.

Other novels (of anime-original material) provide a lot of sidestories and background explanation. The more or less work as a companion piece to the anime, barely treading the same ground. The Code Geass novels are like this. I think the Macross Frontier and Gundam 00 novels are like this, too.

Phoenix Wright has no real gameplay, you learn and do everything through text and portraits, and the only way to lose is to fail a logic puzzle or go outside character.
    Its a VN.

ITT: people who can't even read or watch what they are judging in its original language. Also, generalization and evaluating from a small sample of entire genres and mediums.

    Fail.

No one's saying it's deep shit, but it is true that you can do fun things with the written word that you can't with visual media (and vice-versa).

Because most anime and manga is also "mindless fluff" and saying that LNs suck by comparing them to real 'literature' is idiotic. They are the kind of book that compares better to The Da Vinci Code (which I would much prefer a lot of LNs to). It's entirely irrational to say LNs are inherently worse as a medium.
    >> Anonymous 03/23/10(Tue)15:51 No.32473597
Light Novels are just anime/manga without any art. And hey, without art, all anime/manga are pretty awful, literature-wise. So that's all you're left with.

I've never read any, but I know I'm right!

Not really but there are lots like that which are desperate for anime adaptions. A correct description (for good light novels) would be genre writing influenced by manga, anime and boogiepop.
