    School Libr/a/rian here

A bunch of librarians from school around are going to an event soon where we are provided several thousand dollars and are to buy manga pr comics to stock in our school library

Do you guys think we should stock Jojo's Bizarre Adventure at my high school?

See, I'm a school librarian and a bunch of dudes are suggesting it, but I'm not sure if it's appropriate or popular like Bleach, or Naruto are at my school, and I've never heard of it.

Also, what other manga should we stock?

See, we do have many of those things.

However, it's well known that most students will not read those things, and we must do anything we can to get them to read.

Comics and manga are an excellent way of getting kids to go to the library.

And plus, in this event we are getting money to specifically buy manga and comics for our schools.

So, some suggestions would be very helpful.

Then give them more tests if you want them to read more.
Giving them manga to read will get them to read nothing but shounen.

Give them Romance of the Three Kingdoms, in book format, and tell them to read that, you lazy fuckwit.

The big 3 are Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece. I would say that kids might be interested in those despite the fact that much of /a/ dislikes Naruto and Bleach for poor storytelling. Still, they are popular with the kids.

As I mentioned before, they are a way to encourage students to read more often.

Many students never go to the library, or read at all.

Something popular like manga would be a great way to encourage them to come more often.

So, the school board decided to conduct this event after gathering the research to warrent such an event, and we were provided the funds to make such a thing happen.
And also, although these lists are great, I have very little idea if any of these are actually published in English, or are appropriate for high school audiences (so I don't get any angry parents phoning)

Checking out all would be a big chore, but before I start, any suggestions beforehand?

And the wiki link for Jojo regarding it's content is vague.

Do you think Jojo is suitable for high school students?

From what I read only the third season was published in English.

I don't really believe that manga/comics should be put in a school library, but suit yourself.

    The Pushman and Other Stories
    Good-bye

I think getting less known but better stories would be the appropriate thing to do. That'd be like getting Twilight or Harry Potter. It's already available everywhere and it's not really going to upgrade their reading skills, so why bother putting it in your library?

It's a risky move, but get Stardust Crusaders if you can! I really can't think of anything else except Yotsuba or Gon but Gon is pretty much an artbook rather than a comic book so yeah. I don't know what has been licensed in USA because I never buy manga.

You should know that many of the things on the manga recommendation chart are still ongoing, have questionable content or are not published in English.

I don't normally get into these series but the ones that I would guess are best for you (off the top of my head) are the ones previously brought up:
    Naruto
    Bleach
    One Piece
    Full Metal Alchemist
    Dragonball
That Halo manga (I think that it is called Halo Uprising)

I don't know many shoujo series but one that I would recommend looking into is Love Com (also known as Lovely Complex). It is published in English, has all the the content requirements for a school, and most people think that it is a good read.

I'll take that into consideration, since I'd prefer we'd get things with more substance than anything else, and I am aware that manga or comics can be deeper than some novels, like Watchmen or We 3

At least put in stuff like Tezuka or Tatsumi that has some kind of relevance to history and culture. Plus its the kind of stuff kids aren't going to pick up in a bookstore and might not read otherwise.

Forget the shonen stuff, not because it sucks as a whole or anything, but kids already read that. They don't need your help there.

I know that /a/ is going to get pissy at me for saying this, but most of the students reading Manga in a school would be girls. You should try getting some decent shoujo like Full Moon, Nana, and CCS. They're OK but a little dated. There's much better stuff out there for girls.

And since these series were recommended, then I assume that your library is OK with positive depictions of homosexual and/or incestual relationships, as well as rape scenes and romantic scenes of heterosexual characters embracing while naked?

Graphics seem to upset more people than text. For example, The Grapes of Wrath ends with a scene where a young woman whose child has died feeds a dying man with her breast milk and this book is a classic that gets assigned in high school English classes every year. However, if a graphic novel or manga in a school library depicted the exact same scene with images instead of words, parents would most likely call to have the book banned.

Anyone who lives or has lived in the Seattle area knows what I'm talking about.

Don't worry, I checked out and read real books from the SPL as well. I typically had around 15-20 things checked out at a time I think. haha.

Thanks! It'd be great to get a few western comics in too.

My grandson has a copy of Bone I believe, I saw him reading it in our van once, and he seemed to be enjoying it.

I'll definitely give it a try!

Sounds excellent according to your description and the wiki link. Also the cover looks beautiful.

It'd be wonderful to have more readers like you in our area.

Many students don't even come to our library outside of times when their classes are brought in for projects.

Maybe now we'll have some content to entice them to come.

I wish my high school library had stocked manga. I applaud your efforts, Mr. Librarian.

I remember reading, as a teenaged high school girl:
    Fushigi Yuugi
    Marmalade Boy
    Mars
    Ceres

HOWEVER. This was five or six years ago. (I'm twenty-two now.) You may want to try for something a little less dated, or classics like Osamu Tezuka, whom someone mentioned before. Buddha's a great manga but my personal favorite is Apollo's Song. I cried.

Teenage girls will probably also like Death Note. At least, that's the impression I receive from the fandom. A little gore and character death, but no explicit sexual activity and enough squint-and-you-might-see-it potential homolust for a teenage girl.

I recommend Fullmetal Alchemist and Berserk for the plots, but you're going to end up buying a lot of manga.

OP, were you looking for any type of genre or simply something to entice kids?
    >> Anonymous 03/20/10(Sat)16:21 No.32349962
There's also Halo: Helljumper from Marvel comics. Get that too.

I dislike Fushigi Yuugi because the main character starts off spirited and independent but grows increasingly dependent on the men in her life, and makes increasingly foolish and self-destructive decisions based solely on her waxing and waning relationship with her main love interest, without thought for herself or anyone else.

Also the story starts to drag towards the end.
