The sand in the bottle he carries around is 'special' sand that has chakra in it or some shit like that. In any case, it's faster and can make super defenses, unlike normal sand.

He can use a fuckload of sand. He once turned an green landscape into a fucking desert and buried his opponent under it. Then, he made the sand hard.

On a different occasion, he made a real big sand shield (as in, village size) to stop Deidaras bomb clay from nuking his village.

This is a stupid fight. There's no way of knowing who would win since the universes aren't congruent to make sense when put together.

Since no one seems to know gaara's powers, let me explain. Gaara can control ANY sand, he can even create sand by crushing the rocks in the ground and stuff. At one point he made and controlled enough sand to completely cover what seemed to be a square mile+ of forest. The sand on his back is a batch he's been carrying for years and constantly been pouring chakra into, so it's stronger and easier for him to control.
