  • Kimmo Alm aka "Sysop" from AnT has been spamming us for YEARS now, and has recently stepped it up. This shit has got to fucking stop. As promised, here are all of the e-mails he has sent me over the years (and my responses).

So my theory is that Reki did not actually commit suicide. She was a recluse that gave up on life and had an unfortunate death while in a state that would bring her close to suicide. This is the reason why Reki was not sin-bound from the beginning like Rakka. On the other hand, Rakka did commit suicide.

they all commited suicide. it's the point of the show.

You are confusing two names here.
Reki = pebble = sinbound from the beginning
Rakka = falling down = new Haibane, became sinbound in the series

Otherwise I think that you are correct.

it's not so much of suicide than no being able to accpet death
a 5-yo child can accept death, so they turn into haibanes
like the guy from the factory, he probably died drown in a cold lake, he couldn't accept he had died because he was a child and turned into a haibane

So, their "dreams" that they have in the egg are actually how they died?

Like, Rakka jumped off a bridge or something, and Reki jumped in front of a train?

    Yes

But, I think those who have clear memories of their dreams didn't commit suicide. Still don't know why they became Haibane.

    Sin-bound = suicide

The concept that the "normal" haibanes died before their time or before they could "accept" death is probably right

Not... Entirely sure what Chisa has to do with this, aside from suicide. I mean, she kills herself too, but the result is entirely different. Unless, I don't know, Lain recreated the Wired post-Layer 13 into the world of Haibane Renmei. Epileptic trees go?

both reki and rakka were suicides, so yes they were sinbound

    the others were accidental death

    kana = drowned
    hikari = fire
kuu = fell or some shit who cares
nemu = died in her sleep, maybe OD'd on sleeping pills

and if you REALLY want to get into it, one of the kids dreams about shortcake = choking to death on food

Nothing about it has ever been confirmed, aside from what was in the anime to begin with.

The creator said he wanted to leave it as open-ended as possible, so that people can draw their own conclusions.

the only thing i find is open ended is the crows and the toga (but toga aren't really meaningful to the actual story so i guess its not important)

are the crows actual embodiments of people rakka once knew trying to lead her out of her "sin circle"?
Or are they just representations of past memories that she must recover in order to lead herself out of the "circle of sin" - like the dead crow in the well? (which indicating that rakka probably died in a well as well - no pun intended-)
    >> Anonymous 03/13/10(Sat)20:31 No.32109153
    >>32108966
The way it was portrayed, it seemed to me that the crow was the physical embodiment of the person she once knew.

However, that would mean that the crow-person probably died in the previous life as well, and when you consider that they died just so Rakka would be free of sin, it becomes a little bit of a stretch.
    >> Anonymous 03/13/10(Sat)20:36 No.32109304
    Damnit...

Haibane are those souls who CANT MOVE ON

The sin bound are just those who committed suicide and aren't ready to move on

The team that created Haibane Renmei admitted that it had a lot of christian references, so even the story had christian themes.

Now, there are two things needed to attain the Day of Flight.

    1. You have to forgive yourself - Reki couldn't until the last moment.

    2. You need someone to save you - As the crow was Rakka's saviour, Rakka was Reki's saviour

    Yeah, christian themes.
    >> Anonymous 03/13/10(Sat)20:38 No.32109374

Personally, I believe the crows are kind of like lost memories from the past. (kinda like the butterflies in Boogiepop)

They are said to "carry lost things" (memories)
and can fly over the "wall" which (i believe) symbolizes death

The only thing I didn't like about this series is that you have NO CLUE WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THEY GO OVER THE WALL

I also prefer a closed ending not an ambiguous one because it will always lead to in fighting about the true ending and what ever else was left open. Yes it's nice to sit there and see what others think, but for me it's not a complete ending.

They shared a character designer. If you squint your eyes and look sideways, they might have occurred in the same universe, but that's an epileptic forest.
