Anime Ace is a damn ugly font. So why is it so popular? To me it's the mark of a bad typesetter.

So, what kind of fonts would you recommend?
    >> Anonymous 03/08/10(Mon)14:26 No.31907235
Especially when they bash on Wild Words and then go ahead to use AA which is just as overused, and nasty to boot.

Balanced dialogue fonts with proper A's, for starters.
There's no One True Font (well actually there's one called that), but there are definite NO, NO, THIS SUCKS fonts.

A few good upper case dialogue fonts:
    Action Man
    Astro City
    Jim Lee
    Comicrazy
    Jeff Campbell
    Joe Kubert
    Yadayadayada

And I haven't even gone through half of my font list yet
    Wild Words
    >> Anonymous 03/08/10(Mon)14:36 No.31907541
    Just use Comic Sans.
    >> Anonymous 03/08/10(Mon)14:37 No.31907561
    Comic Sans is superior
    >> Anonymous 03/08/10(Mon)14:37 No.31907580
I always used WW instead of AA. This A just scares me off, and I don't like how it renders on scans.
Aside from that, Blambot fonts are mostly okay.
    Fuck yeah, Comic Sans MS.

Wild Word's S (or was it s?) was messed up a bit. Or maybe it was supposed to be like that but most groups that I've worked/work with have moved away from it. AnimeAce was looked down upon... not even sure when it became popular as I was never asked to use it.

Barely. Its proportions are off, it looks terrible and bloated unless it's really small and it takes up all the space in the bubble unless you shrink it down real small.

Good. I suspect a lot of people use Anime Ace because it has "Anime" in the name and is free to get, but in these golden days of piracy, that's not an excuse.
    >> Anonymous 03/08/10(Mon)14:48 No.31907909
It's popular because it's free, easily obtainable, and less of a trainwreck than Comic Sans.

While I recognize that some fonts look better than others, why does it matter so much what font is used? I mean, I prefer Wild Words over Comic Sans but is there anything wrong with Comic Sans in particular?

Looks like shit, and it's used in about 98.84% of all presentations or texts because people think it makes their work better if the text looks funnieh.

Now here's the exact same page, with the exact same text and punctuations (or lack thereof), done in another font. In this case it's Joe Klubert, but I'm sure a number of fonts would work just as well or even better.

Look at the better proportions, the better fit into the bubbles, the improved legibility and flow.

    >>31908518

While you hold a legitimate point, I think the difference in appearance had much more to do with the work on the first page's typesetting to be terrible. I mean, they hardly even tried to get the text to be roughly the shape of the bubble, much less center it.
    >> Anonymous 03/08/10(Mon)15:10 No.31908640
    >>31908268 why does it matter so much what font is used?
    Flow
    Legibility
    Impact
    Emotion
All these are affected by the font used. A good typesetter will try and pick a font to fit the mood of the series, instead of wielding one font (Anime Ace/WW/Comic sans/Whatever) around like a blunt instrument.
    >> Anonymous 03/08/10(Mon)15:12 No.31908693
    >>31908600
Well, yeah, but for some reason (i.e. good typesetters usually have more sense than to use AA), it's really hard to find a well-done scanlated page that uses Anime Ace. Even then, in 99% of cases I suspect the page would still look better in a different font.

Digitalstrip and 2.0 are good for titles and labels, but a too little stiff for general use as a dialogue font. And I'm not just saying that because they remind me of Random Translator's loli manga.

I no longer have a set font. Almost every series has their own general font these days that I do. I don't particularly like or dislike this trend.

For example, Akumetsu used KoblenzSerial Normal for regular text for the majority of the scanslations afaik. I can't say I really liked that particular font but that's what was used and I wouldn't use it outside of that title (though it may be used in Wolf Guy but I'm not a furry so I don't read it.) Monkey see, monkey do. Izumo, as a group, also really likes using Impact and MouthBreatherBB. MouthBreatherBB has become pretty popular - that or I notice it more since it's pretty easy to tell when it's being used. I'm not sure why tradedaemon likes Impact in specific. It does somewhat fit some of the title text and the like I suppose. There are a variety of fonts used for nonstandard text however and whatever fits goes as the editor's choice. This is where you actually need a font library. It's even worse in shoujo groups but I haven't done a shoujo scanslation since forever.

I used Izumo as an example since I believe none of their recent releases uses WildWords as a basic font. Hentai Kamen did but that's not recent so...
