Berserk doesn't even suck because of the grimdark, it sucks in spite of it. Remember the material that the anime covered? Now THAT was good writing. Don't get me wrong - the protagonist was still a piece of garbage, but the show was undeniably entertaining and well-written.

Everything after that has just been complete trash. The nail on the coffin was Guts getting his Final Fantasy team, full of shounen style gags to fill the space between the random and meaningless grimdark organizations they go and fight against.

Old Berserk - overly gritty, but sharp and to the point story
New Berserk - still overly gritty, bad writing, tries to cover the body odor with crappy attempts at humor

I do love me some grimdark early 90s, most of it is probably nostalgia, I never cared for the exaggerated violence but I loved the fucked up (not so)near future atmosphere.

I don't watch modern anime. It started really fucking sucking for the most part after the millennium passed over.

Grimdark is easy to write.

All that's needed is a main character fighting evil organization and have him fall for some girl running from evil organization, lots and lots and lots of blood, and some long-winded so-called climatic ending. That's 99% of the grimdark animes summed up there. The real writers don't need grimdark. They can make slice-of-life, the anti-grimdark, work, and slice-of-life animes are hard to do. But the ones done right, Azumanga Daioh for example, are vastly superior from the grimdark.
