Stay away from Elfen Lied. It's one of the most over-rated shows ever. If you like sci-fi gore, watch the first episode but know that it never gets better, it just gets worse.

Throw in some piss/shit/kill animals/kill your family/kids are too young/harem stupidity/psycho killer has amnesia and meuz like a kitteh/every sort of abuse that'd get you thrown in jail.... but just sort of thrown in... not really done well.

I stopped watching anime for several years after that show, I was just so disgusted at the entire medium.

Have to agree that Elfen Lied wasn't that great, but its a matter of preference really. Give it a try and see if you like it. Personally, I found it to be an Okay watch.
