    15 KB ANIME SUCKS Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)17:10 No.31702853
    >When foreign cultures talk about Japan, they usually talk about anime and / or manga. Usually, it's anime. Anime is terrible. It used to be okay. Now, it's not. It's inbred trailer-trash in entertainment form: Every season's new Japanese animation places one-upmanship of every single aspect of the last season higher on their list of priorities than even "make something entertaining." The same can perhaps be said of all Japanese entertainment, though it's not relevant anywhere else as much as it is in anime. Anime used to answer the questions of kids' dreams: "How awesome would it be to be a world-class assassin / kung-fu master / robot pilot / baseball hero?" Now it's just a bunch of shit pandering to perverts and pedophiles. Anime heroes used to be people with amazing job descriptions; now they're reasonably young men who find themselves miraculously sharing houses with a dozen girls aged six to nine, accidentally almost touching every other scene. Or else it's just guys with huge hair and impossible weapons shouting jargon. Long ago, manga aspired to be like Dragon Ball Z: graphically iconic, with a story more coherent than it probably needed to be. Now there's the ADHD-addled Dragon-Ball-Z-inspired One Piece, a manga for the Twitter age if there ever was one.

    tl;dr

...okay, actually I did read most of it, I'm kind of embarrassed to admit. But after I hit the heading about "template conversations," I just started skimming. It's all the same thing over and over and over again:

"Life is too much work and no one else's world revolves around my hang-ups."

I mean, the stuff about anime and humor is especially weird; you want more masturbation jokes, but fewer panty cartoons? But it's all variations on the same theme: Tim wants the dominant culture to cater to his personal quirks (e.g. strict diet requirements and broken sense of humor) all while refusing to accommodate said culture's quirks. The most insightful thing he's said is that he's probably one of those people who will hate life no matter where he goes.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)17:25 No.31703415
I doubt this guy is trolling but he sounds like a whiny little faggot too so his opinion shouldn't mean anything to anyone. He complains how he's a vegetarian and how many things in Japan have meat in them.....
    >> Shirai !KURoKo/KV. 03/03/10(Wed)17:25 No.31703421
I'm not even skimming through that wall of text but knowing he's an alcohol-allergic (lol) vegetarian who hates smoking tells me it's not worth it.
    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)17:25 No.31703427
Well you have to consider that this guys probably isn't that much of an anime fan as we are. He has a somehow video game related job and lives in japan and this way it's practically unavoidable to be confronted with this topic.

I read the whole post and while Tim seems to be a somewhat strange guy (vegan seriously? NEVER believed in Santa Claus or something like this, etc.) some of the issues he mentions make me think that japan might not be the great country I always thought it was.

And some of the stuff he mentions really explains some of the bad cliche and comedy parts most animes have.

You're trying to tell me Dragon Ball Z was graphically iconic with a coherent story. And One Piece is a manga on ADHD for twitter obsessed people? i think you forgot which show was about the grunting men who fly around and did the same thing over and over to get longer spikier yellow hair. Or maybe you're confusing One Piece (which was made at the same time as DBZ) with the more recent Ninja craze, Naruto, which i totally agree is for the crazed twitter crowd.

    >I don't like people when they're smoking. I don't like how almost every restaurant has a smoking section, and you invariably have to go through the smoking section to get to the non-smoking section. I don't like that people are allowed to smoke in my favorite little organic vegetable cafe, right there on the floor with the open kitchen. I don't want cigarette smoke near my organic vegetables! Hel-lo? That makes them pretty much not organic anymore! You might as well just be buying them from a hobo, at that point.

Now, I don't smoke. I think it's unhealthy and that the use of tobacco products should be limited in public areas; however, the way he phrases this makes me want to smack the shit out of him.

I'm not really too sure it's fair to call Japan weird. Reason being, any culture can seem weird to an outsider.

    Let's take baseball for example.

    Americans:
When their child strikes out, parents go "Oh it's okay, you did good".

    Japanese:
When their child strikes out, parents go "What the hell are you doing"?

Not trying to bash anyone here. Americans tend to value high self-esteem where as the Japanese value modesty. Which is why the Japanese apologize much too often and talk down on their loved ones in front of other people as a form of modesty. It's a custom that people follow, and feelings usually aren't hurt (believe it or not) because people don't usually mean it.... unless you fucked up something big like being an engineer for Toyota and having hundreds of thousands of cars recalled due to an error on your part.

    >> Anonymous 03/03/10(Wed)18:54 No.31706687
I hated this article at the beginning. He's narrow-minded about anime (not that One Piece is good, but there is still good stuff), and bitchy about other stupid issues like office parties (though the "everything has meat in it" is actually relevant to me and has me reconsidering ever visiting Japan.)

But the further he got into it and was talking about weird ass business and social customs, and extrapolating them to gaming and Japanese culture as a whole, I got pretty engrossed. Some bizarre and fascinating stuff there that is worth reading if only for giving an impression of Japan that's radically different from that of the typical gushing Westerner (or that Azrael guy).

You either leave or deal with it. Its useless to be butthurt over the fact that Japan culture isn't your precious American one. Their entertainment may cater to sexual deviants, and they may not cater to your stupid vegan needs, but tough shit, it's not your nation. How would you like it if some guy came to your house, set up camp, and whined about every possible thing because your house isn't his and you don't have the things he wants and acted like he owns the place? I'd tell him to get the fuck out. It doesn't matter if you think the Japanese are bad. If that's the case, why the hell are you living in their damn nation?
