  • Over the past 48 hours 4chan's formspring page has gotten over 12,000 questions, and I've received over 3,000 e-mails. Many thanks to everyone who submitted a question, and sent me a message! I was able to respond to a few hundred e-mails and had hoped to start answering questions on formspring, but it seems that the number of questions broke the page. Once that's sorted out, I'll sift through them and answer as time allows.
Thanks again for all of the support!

In other news, /rs/ now processes MediaFire/MegaUpload/and a bunch of other links correctly (this had been broken for months). The old links should be updated in about a week (the checker is taking a while).
Thanks to Popcorn Mariachi for spontaneously appearing and fixing this.

Final reminder: Ask questions here, e-mail me here (I read *every* one), and follow 4chan on the Twitter here.

What's the point of HD anime? That's like saying a black square looks better in 720p than in 480p. It's the same god damn thing!

If you're watching an anime for the story, and so long as the quality isn't totally unwatchable, then it doesn't make a bit of difference.

The otaku on /a/ just want another way to be "superior" to the casual anime watcher.

If you watch it fullscreen or on a decent TV, everything non-HD looks like watching in through a wall of water.

Its a distraction if the anime looks like shit because of the video quality. Just because you are willing to have concessions in this area does not mean that i will.

Depends on the production, especially the level of detail and time put into it.

Best examples where HD has made a difference is with theatrical anime, or almost anyone decent looking anime, that was on film. Actual honest to god tangible film stock.

Stuff like Char's Counterattack, Gundam F-91, Patlabor movies, GitS, AKIRA and others look absolutely fantastic. Bubblegum Crisis' BluRay got a slight quality boost to where you can see the visible grain, but it's not to the same level as movies.

Digital animation now, again depending on the project is finally able to start utilizing HD pretty well. Look at stuff like Gundam Unicorn.

Bad encode, it looks slightly better.
On the other hand 1080p is overkill unless it's a gorgeous anime movie

I agree here, but that may be because of my bias because my computer cannot handle 1080p. But I doubt most anime really can provide the benefit of being bigger then 720p.

You can draw a circle that's 24*24 pixels large and it would be recognisable as a circle. Drawing a circle at a higher resolution won't increase the detail, since it's still a circle, but given the choice between the small, blocky circle and the smooth hi-res circle, I would choose the latter.
Also, you're ignoring the existence of backgrounds, which are usually more detailed than the animated art. Mushishi, for instance, would gain a lot from being in HD, I think.

Try watching 480p on anything larger than 32in. It wont turn out well.

    >That's like saying a black square looks better in 720p than in 480p. It's the same god damn thing
No 480p would be the square, 720p would be a rectangle.
