  • Over the past 48 hours 4chan's formspring page has gotten over 12,000 questions, and I've received over 3,000 e-mails. Many thanks to everyone who submitted a question, and sent me a message! I was able to respond to a few hundred e-mails and had hoped to start answering questions on formspring, but it seems that the number of questions broke the page. Once that's sorted out, I'll sift through them and answer as time allows. Thanks again for all of the support!

In other news, /rs/ now processes MediaFire/MegaUpload/a bunch of other links correctly (this had been broken for months). The old links should be updated in 24-48 hours. Thanks to Popcorn Mariachi for spontaneously appearing and fixing this.

To be fair, Louise wasn't even anywhere near as huge a tsunbitch in the novels as she is in the shows. The shows raped the story and characters, more or less.

Nothing to discuss, really. It's just the usual degradation of quality in animu that's been taking place for the last two to three decades. And I'm not talking about artstyle, I'm talking about the actual quality of plots, pace and characters. Nowadays it's all the same shit; either the girls are massive moeblobs, tits on legs or tsunderes, with excessive fanservice and 'whoops teehee walked in on your when you were getting changed' (not that old animu didn't have some of that too, but nowhere near as frequently as now) and pointless harem faggotry. And the guys are rarely, if ever, as manly fuckawesome as they used to be. Like I said, it's just degraded over the years. Not much else to say or do about it.

THIS a hundred times. Saito is pretty fucking awesome in the novels, especially after he gets his shit together after the war.

Two main points: The relationship actually develops consistently, it just takes a shitload of time because there's a great fucking deal of issues both (Mostly Louise) need to get over. Bear in mind the relationship started with her not considering him human. Also, the abuse only makes the moments where Saito's patience runs out and flips out on her SO very fucking DELICIOUS. Volume 11's end is GLORIOUS.

Second: Gandálfr's power is both fucking awesome and consitently used as such. The actual swordmanship is actually just one application, and sadly the only one the enime bothered to show.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/10(Sat)17:32 No.31536134
Then: animu was story-based and characters were not fully developed into archetypes. The animu revolves around the story and not how the characters supposedly act.
Now: animu is character-based, catered to certain demographics such as lolicons, shounenfags, moefags, etc.

Only verbally. He does love her very much* so he would not physically hurt her (Or any other woman for that matter), but given Louise's personality, Siato telling her to shut the fuck up is probably worse than if he punched her.

That, and the anime overblows the phsyical abuse to 11. Louise is mostly stuck up and mean, but it usually takes a long while to get her aggressive. The horse whip was actually a one-time-thing, back when she didn't treat him as human and definitely not played for laughs.

*It's hard to understand why if you've only seen the manga, but he's got his reasons. It's actually pretty sweet.

Explaining the why and how of everything would be too long, but sufice to say that after rescuing Tabitha, the situation is as follows:

-Saito: Honestly in love with Louise, long since stopped being a dipshit in front of boobs.
-Louise: Bouncing back after a bout of self-doubt, her confidence got bolstered and believes Saito loves her unconditionally (He does, but...)

Louise takes the confident thing WAY too far and gets carried away with teasing Saito, actually reahcing the point of making him squirm for the lulz. A bunch of other stuff happens to make Sauto depressed. Boiling point is reached.

Result: Saito flips the shit out on her (mid-batlle no less) telling her precisely all that is wrong with her (character, breasts, lack thereof, more character) and the fact that HE is the one who should pity HER and is the one who is making HER the favor of being in love with her.

Like I said, there's a lot of context involved, but it's essentially the "ki-yay-hippy-yay" of verbal bitchslaps.

Yeah the commander guy just stood there staring him down as he was cutting everyone down and making a B line towards him like a lightning bolt and right before Saito got to him he was taken out by some mages.

Afterwards the guy was like "Holy shit who is this guy?" and a soldier was like "Sir he managed to take out all those hundreds of guys without killing anyone"

That is a hell of a lot more epic than just swinging your sword at a tiny group of people making up an army and 'dying' having accomplished nothing really.

Which is why he got torn to shreds. He made use of Gandálfr's speed and began knocking down the chain of command while the army was semi-paralized (They could barely counterattack since he was keeping close to their own units. It's actually mentioned afterwards that friendly fire caused much more widespread damage than he did).

He still got blasted to hell when Derf couldn't shield him anymore, managed to force himself to charge at the commander and ended up paralized like an inch away from crushing the guy's face.

Before the soldiers finished loading their weapons, the enemy was already in front of their leader.

It was a person armed with a large sword.

The commander, in reflex, tried to pull out his wand, but was sent flying by the sword. Something hit him hard on the side of his head and he instantly lost consciousness.

The next moment, mage knights approached from the sky. They used magic and familiars to track Saito’s movement and then released a barrage of spells.

Wind blades, ice spears, and fireballs flew in waves toward Saito, but were instantly absorbed by the sword. Though the knights were taken by surprise, they did not stop their magical assault.

The knight commander ordered his men to scatter; in the instant he made that order, a gust of wind blew next to him, where the wind struck, his wand was snapped in half and a foot slammed into his stomach. Ribs shattered, the pain was so strong the officer could not cry and soon fainted.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/10(Sat)18:31 No.31538280
Saito danced, dodged, and struck left and right, which caused massive chaos within the enemy formation.

Fighting alone turned out to be extremely advantageous.

To prevent friendly fire, the enemy did not dare to use firearms or projectiles, and with Gandálfr’s speed, nothing in this world could catch up.

But… the mage opponents were still very difficult to deal with.

Although Derflinger could absorb the endless barrage of spells, the amount of magic delivered was certainly above normal, and slowly the sword began to lose its ability to handle them.

    “Ugh!”

    “Left hand?”

    “Hum, damn… I can’t move it anymore.”

Saito could only wield Derflinger with his right hand, his left shoulder took a deep wound, and part of his body was now charred by flame, which came from the fireball that exploded near him.

Due to the attacks by magic and weapons alike… Saito’s injuries became graver every second.

The chaos among the forward guard became progressively worse. General Hawkins received reports that completely boggled him. The communications he received were a complete mess.

Some said, the enemy was a single rider.

Some said, the enemy was a magician.

Some said, it was a part of the enemy army.

Some said, it was elvish mage knights.

Some said, it was an elvish division… etc.

Just as Saito broke the wand of a middle ranked officer, the boy spotted a group of mages. Since so many mages were protecting a single individual, that meant…

“That guy must have a pretty high rank...” Derflinger added. But even though Saito heard him, he couldn’t do much as his body began to be paralyzed by the pain. Very soon he wouldn’t be able to move at all.

He had to save his energy for breathing.

Just to take down one more officer…

    Just to cause more havoc.

Just like this to extend the time, just even one minute, one second, must be taken.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/10(Sat)18:33 No.31538342
He pulled out his wand, chanted his spell, and in one breath summoned a wind blade. But… the enemy swiftly dodged it. He could only see the foe’s blade, flying toward his head.

General Hawkins could only see the shadow in front of him, as if trying to brand it under his vision.

His riders struck the enemy full of magic bolts, each attaching itself on to that swordsman’s body.

Although so many bolts should have been fatal, the wind-like warrior never slowed.

A fencer's sword shot up, slamming into Hawkins' body.

The blade’s tip reached within 5 cm of his face.

Hawkins, not averting his gaze, stared straight at the tip.

But it did not strike Hawkins’ face.

As if time suddenly stopped, the swordsman’s movements froze.

The concept doesn't work out unless you boost his powers to ridiculous levels, which is simply bad writing and completely uncreative.

yeah, it completely misses the melee aspect; and requires ludicrous powers.
exactly how fast does he go?

They're using melee weapons and artillery. Why would they be different?

When cannons started to be used extensively it completely changed warfare and turned the idea of using any significant fortifications into a joke. Warfare change radically.

Now add dragons and magic to that and see what happens to warfare.

Because artillery and infantry are a joke in Halkeginia, or at least largely perceived as such. An entire platoon of inantry can get slaughtered by a single mage and a hundred muskets can't compare to a single fireball.

    Also, flight.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/10(Sat)18:48 No.31538820
Warhammer player here, you don't use tight formations when facing fireballs it ends badly and your orks will hate you for it. And since mages are common as fuck in the ZnT world there will be a shit load of ordinance dropped everywhere when a battle starts.

    I watched the OVA as a kid and was pretty shocked by the violence. Poor Yakumo was getting mutilated most of the time. I don't remember what the story was about at all though. ;_;

Some volumes are, but very sporatically, and many of them unfinished.

    Not really.

Certain adaptations were made (and it was a gradual change, nothing swift and radical), but I don't agree that it completely changed warfare.

Nothing past where the anime's third season ended as far as I know.

This is a blind shot, but perhaps the moron trying to apply medieval tactics to an army of mages hasn't really taken in consideration Saito isn't just some dude with a ssword? I dunno, it's a pretty retarded mistake since it says so straight in the extract posted, but maybe he didn't read any of the several times it was mentioned that he's not moving at human speed?
    >> Anonymous 02/27/10(Sat)18:53 No.31539009
    >>31538975
Pretty much, yeah. It even says he was moving so far that when he ran past an officer and kicked him in the chest, it broke his ribs.

Volume 11 is getting translated right now, that's right after the end of the anime. But there's at least five or so volumes worth of content that got crippled or outright skipped.

Yeah, it's mentioned when Saito is training with Agnes that he only had some vague grasp of tactics since he never bothered with that, since "When you move with Gandálfr's speed, there's no need to use technique".

    >he's not moving at human speed?
At which speed is he moving then? At the speed of a horse? Still no problem. Even faster? Do you realise how ridiculous that would look?

Of course, by boosting his powers to silly levels everything can be explained, but what made Zero no Tsukaima interesting was kicking ass with modern technology, with Saito being good at what he does because his enchantment turned him into a master of the weapon he's wielding (instead of an invincible juggernaut).

There are countless overpowered swordsmen in fiction already. Adding yet another one isn't really the epitome of creativity.
    >> Anonymous 02/27/10(Sat)18:58 No.31539187
    >To prevent friendly fire, the enemy did not dare to use firearms or projectiles, and with Gandálfr’s speed, nothing in this world could catch up.

Saito confirmed for Vacuum photon speed, since the photon on earth are slightly slowed.

Also, it's really worth to read the whole war (Volumes 6 and 7) arc as it was meant to. Saito losing his shit as his friends dive headfirst in a suicidal charge is heartbreaking.

It gets even worse when you remember they survived that thanks to Tiffania, only to get killed anyway in Saxe-Gotha.

I doubt the army had horses when they have dragons. Your still looking at this like its a medieval war when its really nothing like one. This isn't Total War kid
