THIS a hundred times. Saito is pretty fucking awesome in the novels, especially after he gets his shit together after the war.

Two main points: The relationship actually develops consistently, it just takes a shitload of time because there's a great fucking deal of issues both (Mostly Louise) need to get over. Bear in mind the relationship started with her not considering him human. Also, the abuse only makes the moments where Saito's patience runs out and flips out on her SO very fucking DELICIOUS. Volume 11's end is GLORIOUS.

Second: Gandálfr's power is both fucking awesome and consitently used as such. The actual swordmanship is actually just one application, and sadly the only one the enime bothered to show.

Then: animu was story-based and characters were not fully developed into archetypes. The animu revolves around the story and not how the characters supposedly act.
Now: animu is character-based, catered to certain demographics such as lolicons, shounenfags, moefags, etc.

Before the soldiers finished loading their weapons, the enemy was already in front of their leader.

It was a person armed with a large sword.

The commander, in reflex, tried to pull out his wand, but was sent flying by the sword. Something hit him hard on the side of his head and he instantly lost consciousness.

The next moment, mage knights approached from the sky. They used magic and familiars to track Saito’s movement and then released a barrage of spells.

Wind blades, ice spears, and fireballs flew in waves toward Saito, but were instantly absorbed by the sword. Though the knights were taken by surprise, they did not stop their magical assault.

The knight commander ordered his men to scatter; in the instant he made that order, a gust of wind blew next to him, where the wind struck, his wand was snapped in half and a foot slammed into his stomach. Ribs shattered, the pain was so strong the officer could not cry and soon fainted.

Saito danced, dodged, and struck left and right, which caused massive chaos within the enemy formation.

Fighting alone turned out to be extremely advantageous.

To prevent friendly fire, the enemy did not dare to use firearms or projectiles, and with Gandálfr’s speed, nothing in this world could catch up.

But… the mage opponents were still very difficult to deal with.

Although Derflinger could absorb the endless barrage of spells, the amount of magic delivered was certainly above normal, and slowly the sword began to lose its ability to handle them.

“Ugh!”

“Left hand?”

“Hum, damn… I can’t move it anymore.”

Saito could only wield Derflinger with his right hand, his left shoulder took a deep wound, and part of his body was now charred by flame, which came from the fireball that exploded near him.

Due to the attacks by magic and weapons alike… Saito’s injuries became graver every second.

The blade’s tip reached within 5 cm of his face.

Hawkins, not averting his gaze, stared straight at the tip.

But it did not strike Hawkins’ face.

As if time suddenly stopped, the swordsman’s movements froze.

Because artillery and infantry are a joke in Halkeginia, or at least largely perceived as such. An entire platoon of inantry can get slaughtered by a single mage and a hundred muskets can't compare to a single fireball.

Warhammer player here, you don't use tight formations when facing fireballs it ends badly and your orks will hate you for it. And since mages are common as fuck in the ZnT world there will be a shit load of ordinance dropped everywhere when a battle starts.

Of course, by boosting his powers to silly levels everything can be explained, but what made Zero no Tsukaima interesting was kicking ass with modern technology, with Saito being good at what he does because his enchantment turned him into a master of the weapon he's wielding (instead of an invincible juggernaut).

There are countless overpowered swordsmen in fiction already. Adding yet another one isn't really the epitome of creativity.
