    Anime is Japanese for animation.

    We call Japanese animation anime.

    But why don't we call Spanish animation animación?

    Why don't we call Chinese animation dònghuà?

    Why don't we call Italian animation animazione?

    Why don't we call Polish animation animacja?

    I could go on forever.

    Really, why?

    >> Anonymous 02/21/10(Sun)11:59 No.31292403
    Because there's no mentionable animation from Spain, China, Italy, Poland, etc

    The big three in comics are USA, France/Belgium and Japan!
    France/Belgium don't do much animation, so there are only two big in animation: USA and Japan.
    USA = cartoons
    Japan = anime

    All other stuff is unimportant.

    When was the last time a significant portion of the population outside of those countries actually created any animation that a sizable number of foreigners watched?

    If there was a market for any of those, you'd have people using those names. Right now there isn't, they produce shit.

    I'm aware that Japan produces shit as well, but they do produce quality as well.

    Maybe you should go check out Animazione News Network, which is the biggest North American news site for Italian cartoons.

    See where I'm getting at, OP?

    'Anime' is lingo, jargon, slang if you will.
    Not everyone knows what anime is, but between us fans it's a very convenient term.

    No, the word animé is French. Ir is that animè... I can never remember which way the accent mark goes. Anyway the point is the japanese word anime (アニメ) is short for animeshon (アニメーション), which is of course derived from the english word animation.

    What exactly is so funny about calling them Japanese cartoons? That's exactly what they are.

    You mention animu to someone who doesn't know what they are they're just going to ask what the fuck "anime" is...which is JAPANESE CARTOONS.
    >> Anonymous 02/21/10(Sun)12:36 No.31293556
    Anime =/= cartoons
    Because its about tears, love, romance and tragedy
    its makes anime even worse than cartoons in cartoon network
    >> Anonymous 02/21/10(Sun)12:37 No.31293600
    We do that in America because anime is so drastically different than American cartoons. Isn't it obvious?
    >> Anonymous 02/21/10(Sun)12:38 No.31293613
    Polish anime is of course better than japanese anime.
    But japanese is good too, don't lie. I like some japanese anime.
