    I used to think that too, what i comes down to is if you can find the concept of alchemy entertaining or not. Personally I couldn't grasp it at first, especially with souls being attached to armor and limbs being taken off and all of that. I then started to look beyond it and eventually I started liking it more, not for alchemy and fights but rather, its dark dark tone. I love the way how it shows a great dark depressing tone where countless life's are destroyed and ruined. How fathers murder wives, and even their own children. How so many lives are also sacrificed just for the sake of a philosopher stone, and what one person will do in order to keep their own life. It shows how meaningless human life really is and for that reason is why I enjoy FMA.

    The appeal of full metal alchemist is the use of alchemy in an anime. That is the main point of the full metal alchemist series.

    Like /a/ said, read the manga or watch Brotherhood.

    You can watch the original tv series, but it's not recommended.
