I haven't had any scarring experiences at cons. But they do get dull after awhile, especially if you attend the same ones over and over. Same cosplayers show up, same clunky crap in the dealer's room, same 'traditional' songs played at the dance, etc.

Especially the art show. Here's what you see at a con art show: Toons, cats, stuff with wings, dragons, and tits. Picture a cartoon cat with wings, looking at a dragon with tits. You have now seen every convention art show ever.

Getting to meet staffers from various things i.e. voice actors, directors, animators, etc.

Well not really meeting them, more like going to their panel(s) and getting stuff signed.

Haven't been to a con in a few years, but I have mostly fond memories of them. It's neat to see the cosplay, and I like the AMV competitions. A-kon does an all-night hentai screening sometimes, that's cool too. Can find rare things to buy every now and then, or just get doujins for somewhat cheap (compared to importing), it's nice. I don't usually go to any of the panels or really even socialize that much. Might go to A-kon again this year now that you mentioned it.

Overall, hobby goods. Primarily figures but some artbooks and doujinshi for good measure. Although since I've been paying for a larger percentage of my tuition this year, I'll have less opportunities to spend. 2010 will be my 4th year at Anime Central (ACen).

Besides the ability to find rare or discounted figures, I guess the atmosphere attracts me. I understand that, for the most part, cons are smothered in a thick smog of weeabooism and fail, but we still occupy the same subculture. As much as it pains me to ride the same hotel shuttle as whales dressed in Naruto cosplay singing Caramelldansen, I can understand them. It's a similar idea in most panels. Half the people there are retarded (and will probably make reference to 4chan during the allotted time), but its nice to see and interact with a visible community, regardless of how inept, unfriendly or weeaboo it is.

I've been to a fair few cons, but I've only cosplayed twice:

The first time I wore a suit of Enclave Advanced Power armor.

The seconds time I went as Maiza from Baccano.

To meet and take pictures of freaks, especially the crowd that always accompanies any kind of rave or dance. I find it interesting that you can meet these people who are probably completely normal and have boring IT-type jobs the rest of the year, but act like complete nuts when there's a con on. I've got more ideas for clothes from those places than anywhere else.

Otherwise I usually hit the dealer room, play rhythm games, etc. I'll hit video rooms to preview new shit if it looks interesting, or go to a panel if it reflects my interests. But most of the panels I've been to have turned out to be shit, unless they're put on by a college proffessor or something.

I've always enjoyed going to cons because it's fun to cosplay, meet other fans/cosplayers, and maybe go to panels (given that there are any good ones). Getting to meet VAs/industry insiders is fun when the con can get interesting guests. Only thing is, some of the cons I go to seem to have a problem getting different guests of honor every year. I'm going to AWA this year, and every year I've attended, it's been the same few VAs as guests. This is supposed to be one of the biggest cons in the country, I'm sure we can get more VAs than just Vic Mangina every year. Hell, they got Johnny Yong Bosch at Tekkoshocon, which is easily half the size.

It's always neat to see so many people, although with a lot of people, there are always the folks you want to avoid. Nighttime at cons is always more mellow. Hentai rooms are fun as hell. Watching Darling in a big room with a bunch of other people and seeing them all do the Hyper Erection Mode spin is like nothing else (Professor Pain wasn't quite so fun). I guess it's the overall atmosphere, just a bunch of people there wanting to have fun and talk about something they all enjoy, that attracts me. You can't really do shit like this outside of conventions, aside from joining an anime club and hoping to god they're not all idiotic Narutards.

Otakon 2009, I went to Otakon with my little sister. I was also leaving for college that fall so I wanted to spend some quality time with her. She had a great time and it was really cute to watch her run after cosplayers and ask to take their picture because I remember doing the exact same thing 4-5 years ago when I started going to conventions. In the dealer's room I bought her a keychain of Suzaku's lancelot drive thingy because he was her favorite character.

I went to Connecticon last year with friends. I even cosplayed as Rolo from Code Geass (At the request from my friend. She made the costume and everything, so 'Why the heck not?') It was pretty fun, I'm going again for sure.

The cosplay was pretty cool too. I didn't see many 'Fat Yokos', but I did see a Steampunk Kamina. It's just so neat seeing people in costume, and seeing them walk around the nearby area within the 3 days. I swear just a trip to Burger King felt awesome.

Oh and buying 2 dollar manga from a random comic vendor on the last day was pretty cool. Oh and picture's from Cosplay Chess turned Cosplay Deathmatch.

I'm thinking about going to Anime Boston this year, is it usually any good? I know Nobuo Uematsu is going to be there which will be awesome, but aside from that.

Well at Youmacon we get the Spoony Bards who are awesome, so we always have good music.

The tabletop area (basically /tg/) is usually seperate from the weeaboos and everyone there is cool. I learned some cool obscure games there.

Arcading can be fun with a friend. And despite the low power levels of the mainstream, the animus they show there are generally pretty good. (I mean fuck they showed Kamen Rider!)

The panels are pure shit though, I avoid those like the plague.

Plus Sized Otaku Panel...that is all.
