Gainax made Evangelion and FLCL, propelling them to the top. They also have Gunbuster and Gurren-Lagann, that keeps them there. And they actually have tried different genres and themes despite specialising in mecha - most studios would freak at the idea of not doing something they're familiar COUGHKYOANICOUGH.

Most studios are nowhere near Gainax's level.
