The movie is good, but it's not really an adaptation of the books. You could say that the books inspired this movie.

Also, the idea of the movie is to make Holmes an action hero. don't start bitching if you see him kicking some ass, you should know that the movie is going to be like this from the very beginning.

Actually this is a misconception, the series was over but the fans wanted Holmes to come back from the dead after he went over a waterfall with Moriarty.

That was when he was retconned with fighting skill. The author himself fucked over his character, though Holmes had spent more than enough time in the orient to learn jiujistu.
