PCWC:
Your style, both in story telling and art, has changed since Ichigo
first received his powers. Quite a few readers say this is a bad thing.
Kubo:
Quite a few readers haven't lived through the 70s. Sure the free love
was great, everything was new and fun...until you contracted AIDS! Is
that what the readers want? AIDS? Because I don't sell that kind of
merchandise. The 70s can't last forever and neither can my style.
PCWC: You sure do a lot of color pages for Shonen Jump and it's hard to argue that your ability isn't top notch.
Kubo:
Well, I love colors. I've loved them ever since I began dipping my head
in paint every Saturday afternoon. To become the colors, to breathe the
colors, to devour the colors, this is what it means to be Tite Kubo.
PCWC: A guy high off of paint?
Kubo:
Essentially, yes. But I take things a step further. You know how some
artists get their ideas by smoking pot. I smoke pot, cocaine, heroine
and inject a lively amount of LSD into my cerebrum all at once. The
ideas I came up with were so grand that I could only crappy storylines
in order to maintain my own sanity.
PCWC: And that's an excuse for the cliffdive in quality and substance in Bleach?
Kubo: Essentially, yes. |
