So /a/, why is it that you hate buying manga or anime DVDs so much? Is it just a lack of money or is it something more.

I love my collection of One Piece and Pluto volumes on my shelf, I think they look great and I can read them wherever I am now. I'm going to buy more when I get my next paycheck, hopefully I'll have a lovely shelf in about 6 months time.

It's fear of spending money, when it could be spent on: food, better TVs, better monitors, better computers, cars, debt, bills, other electronics, other hobbies, clothing, etc.

You can get it for free and in most cases, upwards of 90% the same or better quality as a legal alternative. Anime routinely has the best quality as far as movies rips from what I've seen.

I'm a downloadfag, but I do buy manga/dvd/etc. if I really like the series.

I only do this for the sake of collection.
I care not for the actual industry that profits from this.

I don't buy as much manga anymore. Only buy the odd Urasawa and CLAMP title here and there.

Because I've recently developed an expensive taste when it comes to clothes and make-up.
    >> !!walw6pK4Alo 12/08/09(Tue)17:24 No.28444914
But I suspect it's not just the act of buying the manga or anime. We bought a lot in February-March when Best Buy was having their awesome sale. It's more than anime and manga are just more expensive than we feel they should be.

I had huge threads confirming that several hundred people would buy more manga if it were at the Japanese prices of like $5-6 dollars brand new, $1-2 dollars used. When the stuff is at its cheapest of $7.99, it's just seen as needlessly pricey.
    >> Anonymous 12/08/09(Tue)17:25 No.28444926
Because I spend my money on things that matter.

Clothes. Dinner with friends. Textbooks. Save the rest.

I don't have time to buy some shitty books I could just as easily save on a hardrive.

Honestly, it's a problem of money for me. Not only that, but I prefer not to have anything physical that can identify me as a weeaboo.

Image the situation. Your friend walks in your dorm room and by some strange chance the first thing he sees is your manga collection. He pays no attention to anything else. He walks over and check out the small collection you have and asks: "What the f*** is 'Hayate the Combat Butler'?"
    >> Anonymous 12/08/09(Tue)17:26 No.28444995
I wouldn't buy anime anymore, but I'm not a big fan of TV.

I have spent a good bit on money on manga lately.

    Bought in English:
    Negima 1-24
    Koukou Debut 1-3
    Crimson Hero 1-4 +6

    In Japanese:
    Noramimi 9
The World God Only Knows 5, 6
    Ice Revolution 1-3

glad to know i'm not the only one who laughed when you said "collection of one piece". why would you buy that?! Onemanga has it all and its so long too. Also, many of the arcs suck. Maybe if you said you only buy some volumes, i would laugh less. Like the past 4 or 5 arcs, then i would approve.

$7.99? Pluto sells for £9.99 per volume in Forbidden Planet, and the smaller volumes for shonen etc. were around £6.99. I would love your low US prices, we pay double. Granted, the Pluto volumes were very nicely printed, as in you could open the page fully without bending the thing irreparably.

I used to buy a lot of manga in my teenage years but I had to go study farther from the US border. Add to that that most releases were being hella long and/or not catching my attention enough. So I stopped buying until further notice, same for games, although Rythm Heaven for $20 and Fire Emblem: Shadow Dragon for $5 was a great deal.
This is all I've had since around 3 years ago.

    Picture it.

Your friends walk into your room, anime and manga on your shelf. Since you live in a country where people bias everything from a single look, they decide to go home and never talk to you again.

That's what I think will happen to me, so I keep my goddamn room free of anything that isn't related to my personal likings, seriously.

But I have to admit, I do have 2 Card Captor Sakura: Master of the Clow books and a Danboard (but everyone just thinks he's fucking adorable).

That's just my two cents (or, two pennys if you count on where I live)

Most people are just confused and think its all porn. I always assure them it isn't and we have no problems after that. Some of them even said they checked out a series online after I showed it to them and I really liked it.

Its just a stupid social taboo thing, decent people will get over it.

Because manga is a one-time deal. Re-reading manga is boring as shit as long as your memory is better than a child's because you can remember the storylines and even some pages after just a glance. Think about it, a minimum of $8 for some SJ volume takes on average 60 minutes to read if you slow down and appreciate the artwork. That's an expensive hour, plus the cost of the time you spent making that money and the time you could have spent doing something worthwhile.

Believe me. I bought a ton of fucking manga right after I got into reading them, and all they do is collect dust and unwanted questions from anyone venturing into my bedroom. DVDs are a slightly smaller waste of money because they can be had for cheap(er) if you look, there is re-watch value in the best shows, and you can actually sell them once you're tired of looking at them. Collecting anime/manga is just that-- collecting. Even fags who spend all day F5ing /a/ and fap to their waifus are really just casual fans with too much time. Take away that free time and it's a pretty easy habit to break.
    >> Anonymous 12/08/09(Tue)17:49 No.28445706
I hate spending money on something I know I could get for free. Also, I really don't want physical copies of stuff. I watch everything on my computer, swapping out DVDs sucks, they take up space, get scratched, etc. If I did buy any I would just end up ripping them to disk anyway. Plus, it's easier to hide your power level this way.

Depends on the manga. Rereading something that's got some measure of depth to it, even if it's as little as Death Note or Elfin Lied, can wind up with you teasing out some detail or another meaning you missed the first time, giving you a better appreciation of the story at large.

    I buy manga because I'm a bookfag.

Anime DVDs are horribly overpriced and are always 1-2 years behind the current season. Also, the original animators rarely profit from localized DVD sales so it's not like you're really supporting the anime industry.

I doubt the manga artists see anything other than the licensing fees from Viz or whoever is publishing in English. I do like physical copies of manga but I have no allusions that my money is going anywhere except into their pocket. At least the English companies bring a lot of good series over here, I hope that eventually there will be series that are more popular here than Japan.

You must have ADD, I've re-read every single one of my manga volumes at least three times. Upwards of 5 in the case of really re-readable ones like Yotsuba&. And I think my Azumanga Daioh omnibus has probably seen about 7 re-reads worth (I tend to just pick it up and open at a random page).
