I've been told that the latter two just turn into DBZ ripoffs, where One Piece actually has a plot and zero "I MUST TRAIN FOR TWO YEARS TO GET STRONGER!" sequences.

I freaking love One Piece but it helped that I read the manga first. The anime is good but drags at points because it's so long-running. For me, Arlong Park is where it gets awesome and stays awesome. That arc starts at episode 30 but if you get that far odds are you probably already like the show anyway.

If you're looking to get into anime, Cowboy Bebop is always the show I suggest for newbies.

Listen OP. You don't know /a/. Half is "One Piece is something I worship", half is "One Piece is the worst thing ever". Take it from me, the anime is terrible compared to the manga. Stick with that, it's amazing.

OP, I just started One Piece about a month ago and I'm a little over halfway through it. My opinion (so far) is that it is good, with moments of greatness.

It's far too simplistic, and consequently, far too "safe" writing-wise to elevate itself into the realm of all around greatness. What I mean by that is that One Piece never strays from the timeless, tried and true plot elements of a classic shounen. The good guys are the good guys, the bad guys are the bad guys. There's hardly ever any moral ambiguity. There's no complex fighting mechanics like Hunter Hunter's nen system. You either have a Devil Fruit power and you use it as you see fit, or you're a normal fighter. That kinda stuff.

If you're cool with that, then you'll like it. I know I am.

anime is watered down artistically to appeal to the general masses. manga has a lot more artistic value to it, especially considering it's the foundation for an anime. the only thing anime has over manga is sound and music.

Having morally ambiguous characters do not necessarily equate to something being good. You have a point about the fighting style though, but One Piece isn't really a "battle/fighting" manga like Jojo or HxH, and I think more of the appeal comes from its story.

In any case, just repeating what others will say, which is to just stick with the manga. And if you don't like it, just drop One Piece and watch something else. No need to force yourself through something if you're not having much fun with it.
