There are some things the government does well, other things that the private sector can do well. This is based on how individualized the service should be many times. Roads are universal, but I wouldn't want a universal haircut provided by the government (this is an example, for sake of a point).

The main point is that socialists want greater government involvement than some want. Not that they are on the other hand advocating for complete free market everything, such as defense or fire.

When the US Government actually tries to do it themselves when they suck. The US Government is great at regulation but horrible as actually accomplishing things.
