Would you ever join an anime & manga club /a/?

Or are you content to lurk in the shadows, hiding your power level?

Me personally, I'd sooner die than reveal my hobby to the "normal" outside world.

i wentto a meeting of the one in my uni.

i just felt kind of bored. i couldn't have interesting discussions with them because they were all a little dumb and had pretty low power levels

    >> Anonymous 11/13/09(Fri)10:00 No.27583292
No, though I don't think it's a big deal, and I don't have the same complex with most of the club-type goers as much of /a/non does, (it's not like most of them are any better than any of the club-goers who they all claim are autistic and weird, the club members just happen to be more vocal) I just simply don't see the point in watching anime with a large group of people when I have ways to watch it faster in the comfort of my own home.

And they're always about two years behind and there's not really much to strike conversation about anyways, so I question the point.
    >> Anonymous 11/13/09(Fri)10:03 No.27583356
While I am in no position to even be able to join an anime club, from my past experience with such things, the people that join them have very low power levels and only watch the most mainstream of stuff. They also smell, act very autistic, and generally people I wouldn't want to be around. Now with that said, I would love to hang out with other people who loved anime and manga as much as I did as long as they actually showered daily, were not completely autistic, a little bit would be ok, and they didn't only go on about how awesome the last episode of Bleach was.

Sometimes I drop into anime club during the first week or so of school to see if there is anyone else of worth that dropped by. You know, the sort of people who like anime, they're new to college and want to make friends who share their hobby.

Then they see anime club and decide to never discuss it again.

Usually there will be atleast one cute, skinny girl with tie-dye hair and I'll talk to her and she'll be nice and we'll hang out for a while, maybe screw around.

Anime club has its uses, but anime isn't one of them.

I think in this case, it actually is being used to mean autistic.
I mean, have you seen a lot of self-professed anime fans? That lack of even rudimentary social skills isn't necessarily idiocy, it's an affliction.
Not to say there aren't plenty of just dumb motherfuckers out there who love the animu, there are just a lot of socially retarded ones, too.
    >> Anonymous 11/13/09(Fri)10:23 No.27583688
    >>27583588
A lot of them are also teenagers, though. Just because you were a teenager and you weren't as dumb doesn't mean they all are.

And lack of social skills doesn't mean you're necessarily autistic at all, there are a lot of underlying factors that can lead to poor socialization, and there's probably some sort of critical period for that late in elementary school or something-if you don't learn it by then, you'll never understand it completely, even if you do manage to get a job and get along fairly well with others.

That's not to say that some of them aren't autistic, because some anime fans genuinely are. I just think it's vastly overused these days, it's becoming the new ADHD.

I'd join one if it held any interest whatsoever for me. As it is, the only ones I've ever seen have consisted of the worst kind of Gaia detritus, the fangirls who can only be described as squealy, the borderline-insane fanboys who are incapable of recognising the existence of a position on a show that is neither unadulterated worship of its every last aspect or complete contempt, people who use some shows as a means to make themselves feel smart and who take pains to seek me out every time they come up with the latest 'argument' despite my disownment of the entire organisation seven minutes after joining, and the rampant japanophiles who, despite having every opportunity, have yet to travel to the land of their dreams because the slightest scintilla of recognition remains that they are delusional as fuck. I've only met one person who I'd choose to talk to, and he had a bad dose of whatever the fuck he loaded his veins with, had a psychotic episode, and headbutted a wall until he knocked himself out and died of massive cranial hemmorhaging.
    >> Dr. Baron von Evilsatan 11/13/09(Fri)10:51 No.27584188
I like to talk about the shows I've watched critically, and in detail. I like to take apart the world they show and see if it can build itself. I like to figure out the mechanics behind the strange shit in the show, and the rules under which they operate. I like to take apart the message a show brings, if any, to see if it actually backs itself or if it's surface story. I don't give a fucking shit about who is awesome, sexy, a slut, my personal wish fulfilment, or how many panty shots per second. It is immaterial to me exactly how many times you have masturbated to any given character. I don't like it when they just make shit up in the show, and I loathe people who try to justify nonsense with nonsense. I don't mind talking about Japan, but I am going to talk about the Japan that actually exists and not some mystical fantasy land where all is honourable and well.I want to talk about the meanings of a show, what they say and how, why this is that and all that stuff, but I don't want to fuckign talk to you about it if you do not actually get it. I'm not going to tell you that you must be smart for getting it, because neither of us is smart for getting it. It's fucking simple and the reason some people don't get it is because they don't feel the need to. I don't want ot roleplay the characters, and you're doing a shit job anyway. Even if I did stick aroudn in a club, I'd just be ruining it for everyone else.

Some days I wonder where the fuck all the other people like me are. Then I remember we're all on the internet being bitter that we can't find anyone else to yell at constantly. It's probably a lot more fun to be a raging fanboy.

A thousand times this. One of the more fun points of watching anime are like you said, basically stripping it down to the bones and discussing it to hell and back. Even when bitching about various plot points in anime I adore, I'm having an awesome time. And I'm sure that goes for most of you here.

I was in an anime club.
It was probably the worst decision of my life.
The people there are obnoxiously loud and vocal about very stupid things.
    They constantly yell internet memes.
They did the fucking Haruhi dance.
    They smell awful.
They're all socially retarded. You can't have a casual conversation with them because they don't know how to.
The only reason I was in anime club was because one of my friends was there. And all we ever did was make fun of the shows they all chose. Which were all very terrible.
Long story short I was only with the club for a single semester.
