I know of two anime/manga from 2003 (Diebuster/Ouran) that reference moe. I'm sure there are earlier examples. Fanservice and shonen are alive and well. New shows feature more moe because that's what their audience actually wants. New shows are also on average better than old shows, but no one remembers the wealth of extremely shitty old shows, just the classic gems. Enjoy your gaijin-tastes-centric nostalgia goggles.

That being said, I spend most of my time trying both to watch already finished stuff on /a/'s recommendation chart thing, and trying to keep updated with the decent stuff currently airing. This is the biggest misconception of all anime that somehow it was once good and now it's shit because they're only producing moe. Dear fucking god you 12 year old little shits. The problem is you all were introduced to anime 4 years ago when mommy and daddy finally upgraded their dial up internet and you watched 15 years of the most violent anime in one year.

NEWS FUCKING FLASH anime was never about violence and psychological thrillers. 95% of anime has always been cutesy childish shit from the 70s Candy Candy to 80s Magical Angel Creamy Mami to 90s Mysterious Magic Fan Fan Pharmacy just because you didn't know about it doesn't mean it doesn't exist!

Moe is not ruining anime you fucking retards. There is more anime being produced now than ever before with the same percentage of hardcore action and whatever shit you guys like as before.

The shows you think are the best shit ever were late night niche market shows. Cowboy Bebop was watched by maybe 5000 people when it aired in Japan but oh god we must have more it's the best show ever! Stop thinking that just because you watched a bunch of shows that were awesome they all came out at the same time in Japan, the above mentioned Bebop came out in 1998 while GiTS: SAC came out FOUR FUCKING YEARS LATER.

Epic shows don't come out every fucking month for you to piss yourselves over so cry somewhere else.

Let's get one thing straight here. Anime is not some mystical art form that is beyond comprehension. It is and will always be a form of entertainment, and the entire point of entertainment is to appease the audience. Not to make you have some deep meaningful conversation in your daily life. It is acceptable in society that while movies are a form of entertainment, they can be also viewed as works of art.
Why do you think anime is any different?

The Shakespeare analogue is especially amusing, because while Shakespeare definitely had some amazing plays, he was generally the entertainment of those times, and just like movies, you can view his work as art.
