    Oh, h/a/i guys,

Don't mind me, I'm only streamlining the VN material by taking out the wordy parts.

what in chess is a back rank mate
    >> Anonymous 09/10/09(Thu)07:21 No.25090627
I actually enjoyed this series until I read the VN and I realized what a shitty adaptation it was.

In chess, a back rank checkmate is a checkmate delivered by a rook or queen along a back rank (that is, the row on which the pieces (not pawns) stand at the start of the game) in which the mated king is unable to move up the board because the king is blocked by friendly pieces (usually pawns) on the second rank.
    >> Anonymous 09/10/09(Thu)07:24 No.25090662
    >>25090623
It's where a king is put into Checkmate while being on the row from which all the pieces start, not the pawns though.

Usually done by a rook or a queen.

So, it implies Battler painting himself into a corner as far as Episode II is concerned?

I've never heard a chess term called "accept" before what is it?
    >> Anonymous 09/10/09(Thu)07:38 No.25090910
    >>25090725
Yes, Battler cornered himself because he refused to believe one of the 18 people was the culprit and kept looking for a way to blame a 19th person. As such, he "loses" the second game, but regains his confidence again to play the third one.

Pawns don't go that way. In a standard checkboard, white is down and black is up. So Black can only move his pawns downwards.

    >Back rank mates occur quite often in games at fairly low levels, as it occurs out of carelessness. This is due to the fact that beginners typically lack the skill to realize that such a fate could occur based on the laws of the game. At higher levels of play, though the mate itself does not occur very often, play is often affected by the possibility of it—the fact that a player has to spend time guarding against the mate may leave him vulnerable to other tactical ideas.
    >> Anonymous 09/10/09(Thu)08:14 No.25091618
There's no real logic or reason tot his show. What it comes down to is essentially the same shitty willpower battle seen in TTGL "Ill never surrender to you beatrice!" "WELL TAKE THIS THEN"
"NO I HAVE THE POWER TO GO ON" hurrrrr
    >> Anonymous 09/10/09(Thu)08:14 No.25091626
Haha, this thread reminds me of my primary school chess club. I only went because one of my friends was in it, and we got entered into a tournament. I was a complete beginner.
So to cut a long story short, I had this kid in checkmate for at least 6 turns before either of us noticed.
    >> Anonymous 09/10/09(Thu)08:15 No.25091654
    >>25091618

Battler's allowed to keep going because Beatrice lets him. Remember the whole premise she's working from is that she's bored and wants to make him surrender completely--as long as he's willing to get back up and fight her again, no matter how many times he cries and gives up, he's still in the game.

No. Just no. It's not like that at all. Battler isn't able to go on because he has high willpower. He continues on because Beatrice is losing on purpose. She could win the game at any time. She could win, kill him, and move on. But she CHOOSES to play the game with him. She chooses to drop hints to him, even though it's not required.

You're clearly not paying enough attention.
