if
those industries were losing serious money to piracy, you can bet they
would be doing a lot more. right now, they simply resort to
intimidation because the actual loses are a drop in the bucket compared
to what the make. for instance, a quick look on pirate bay suggests
that less than 10 000 people have downloaded (or are downloading)
batman arkham asylum, a game which is guaranteed to sell at least a
million copies in north america alone. thats not really a serious loss.
can
you name one anime title thats sold a million copies in north america?
or even 100 000? the vast majority of anime consumers, am already small
market, download their shows and then never bother to buy the dvds once
the show becomes licensed. many shows sell enough to break even, but
not enough make a profit, which is one of the reasons so many companies
have shut down recently (geneon, central park media, and now adv). if
this continues, japanese companies may pull the plug on all anime
licensing, and then crack down on the piracy, because it no longer
serves their purposes of getting the word out. an industry that has
real money to lose will fight much harder than one that only loses
pocket money. |
