The mega-popularity of Haruhi, mostly because of its moe factor (besides generally being a parody of moe) and, to a lesser extent, Lucky Star, began a chain reaction as other animation studios scrambled to cash in on the moe craze. The sudden glut in moe shows marketed to ronery otaku began to scare away the more "casual" anime fans who actually watched anime for the good shows, and DVD sales began to drop since nobody but the ronery otaku wanted moe.

This decline in DVD sales tipped the delicate balance of the world's economy, indirectly causing the housing crash in the USA and causing the world economy to slip into recession.

Thus, moe is the cancer that killed the economy.

    Wow, that's pretty elaborate, OP.

tl;dr; People forget true nature of Haruhi seen in S1 and Novels after EE and S2 fiasco..

Except it's the "hardcore" fans that buy dvds, not the casuals since it's like $60 dollars for two episodes. Casuals wouldn't do that in Japan.
    >> Anonymous 08/27/09(Thu)10:42 No.24520283
If that's the case, I'd like even more moe shows

I'd say it's the other way around. Look at the video game industry, they get most of their revenue from casuals and the niche market is a minor concern.

Really, the 'good anime' mustn't be as good as you think.
    >> Anonymous 08/27/09(Thu)10:43 No.24520317

That's what I'm saying, the rise of moe scared away the "casual" fans who didn't want to be associated with moe garbage being shoved around everywhere.

Admit it, this is the true reason why there is a global recession!

    4/10

    Moe became popular AFTER Haruhi
    >> Anonymous 08/27/09(Thu)10:47 No.24520404
it's all true. dragon ball z made millions and that's because anime back then was good so people actually bought it but now it's all crap like haruhi.

I find it interesting that you mention it being a parody of its own genre, yet it in no way criticizes it to any extent that would have any progressive effect on Japanese animation culture.

Haruhi was only ever good because of the dancing.

There should be more Rozen Maiden style anime.

You get literally the best of both worlds. Excellent characters, plot, and design. Able to switch between serious and light hearted without disrupting the nature of the series, and plenty of endearing traits.

Well, when you browse /a/ it looks like the western casuals still hate it.

But it doesn't really click the same as heavily otaku-moe anime. I have likened it more to Azumanga before, but while Azumanga is a Comedy/Slice of Life, K-ON is a Slice of Life/Comedy, I guess if that makes sense, cause I are dumb.

K-ON! is lighthearted, fun girls doing fun things. Not reference heavy, no real pantyshot/sexual pandering, but plenty of cute pandering. Things like that probably click better with casuals.

    I think.

Really? Of the few episodes I watched, I'm pretty sure that I noticed a few sexual undertones. Like Mugi awakening to the more perverted things of life, I dunno.
