Merkatz is the one fucked up part of LoGH I noticed. Okay, so first he splits off with the nobles to fight Lohengramm and then goes to Pezzan. Pezzan takes it in the ass and then he goes to the Alliance for sanctuary. Now suddenly he's on the alliances' side. Why? Wouldn't he rather go back to the empire even though its under new rulership?

Merkatz didn't go to Phezzan first, he went straight to Yang, because he couldn't stand the thought of serving under Reinhard, but decided he would fight to restore the Goldenbaum dynasty. He chose Yang because he heard Yang wan lenient towards his enemies. While with Yang and everyone, he was won over by their dedication to the principles of freedom and their friendship for each other and towards the end of the series became convinced of the need for free government.

It was very popular when it came out among anime fans, to the point Yang was winning many character polls. It did help that ads for LoGH related anything were constantly in anime-related magazines for several years. Right now I would say it shares the same popularity on the Japanese internet as the English-speaking internet.

To big a mountain to climb and now with the market the way it is there's no way to distribute DVDs. a digital release would be possible but no one would do that.
I think some US network show should try and adapt it into live action. It shouldn't be to hard and I could live with the name changes they'd probably pull ("Can't have a hero called Yang! Far to exotic!".) 13 hour long eps would cover the end of the Nobles uprising.

I seem to be the only person who never really liked Yang as much as the other characters. He seems to be perpetually conflicted over his allegiance to democracy, and that conflict kills a lot of people and is one of the main causes of the Alliance losing the war. By the end of the series, his question regarding the usefulness of democracy in relation to the flawed nature of human beings is still unresolved. Reinhard is determined and knows exactly what his ideals are. I much prefer a character that suffers from tunnel-vision than one who is wishy-washy.

Yeah, I always wondered how they could show that on television. Then I remembered LoGH was initially released as an OVA.

Less blood/gore would obviously not make the series any worse, but it did give that extra tint of realism and "war is TERRIBLE" to the show (in a good way).

It was definitely one of the most memorable scenes in the series. It was also simply scarring. I comes out of nowhere and you just feel sick, knowing that this is what's been happening thousands and thousands of times in each battle, but this is the first time you really SEE the real horror of it.

    war sucks.
