First
off, let's be clear that this is something that obviously appeals on
some everlasting level. There WILL be giant robot shows until the end
of time.
We start TTGL with wimpy kid and crazy
"brother-figure". This is fun. It moves quickly, good animation, it
sucks you in. Then you get the literal "space flight" launch at the end
of the first episode. Strong start. Second episode covers a lot of the
typical concepts of giant robot shows and combining in a great parody
fashion. Few episodes to bring in additional character, and then we
have Kamina's death. It's over the top and GAR wonderful. Nia's
addition afterwards is interesting in that you are meant to hate her
compassion and eventually broken down by it. Episode 11, Simon's coming
out party, is badass. Episode 15 is an interesting finale. At this
point, we've had a very good, if not generic, show.
Where I
think TTGL shines, and changes peoples lives, and all of that wonderful
shit is part 2. First off, we get to see a time skip done right. The
characters all have a progression that makes some sense, but the WORLD
has a progression that is perfect. From the ineffective government, to
the people forgetting what the world was like a few short years
before-- pitch perfect. The final "GARlock" saga takes a lot of
classical ideas to new heights. The idea of warriors without a war, and
then the idea of a "second" war. The "you could be the villain" concept
is pretty sweet as well. Finally, the fact that we go from digging
tunnels underground to GALAXY CHUCKING is pretty fucking swell. |
