    I watched it on Adult Swim. Recorded it on VHS because they hyped it up so much.

    I watched those tapes hundreds of times.

    I went out and bought all 3 DVDs.

    $90. The only money I've ever spent on anime. On effectively just crappy special features and some insert booklets.

    I always felt that FLCL was a kind of litmus test for determining who would be a enduring anime fan and who would just get bored of it after a while.

    FLCL has almost everything that one can find appealing in an anime: good music, good character design, slick animation, quirky Japanese pop references, cute girls, and an original aesthetic. On the other hand, it encompasses almost everything that can turn someone off to all anime ever made, such as: a meandering, pointless storyline, an emphasis on style over substance, sexual perversion/panty shots, teenage angst mixed with a dose of philosophy 101, and generally any kind of moemoe shit that people might find downright weird.

    In those six short episodes, you can find nearly every single trope used in every single anime ever made as well as other structural elements that epitomize most generic anime storylines.
    It's a pastiche of Japanese anime in general, simultaneously praising and critiquing it in a single stroke. You either love it or you hate it.

    But whatever you do, just don't take it too seriously.
