I started reading Death Note and it was interesting. My friend around the same time showed me a .swf on shoopdawhoop.com of the Rozen Maidens. I've always been into anime. Although before the late '90s I knew it as "japanese cartoons" and my family knew it as "those evil japanese cartoons". I mean, supposedly, I watched Mazinger on TV with my uncle when I was < 5yo, and stuff like that. I remember I was forbidden to watch Ranma, but I watched it anyway, for example.

When, around '98 or '99, I had internet for the first time, I was looking for cartoon porn once, and then I found out it was called anime. And then I found a lot of communities (some great ones, but most of them pretty shitty), but most of those are already dead.

When I was younger I remember getting ready to go to school one morning it was 6:05 am. While I was putting on my shoes I was watching TV and all of a sudden I realized this really cool looking show was already on. I remembered the more I watched, the more I liked it, I kept watching until the end and found out it was Pokemon. I kept watching everyday and I even found out that the show aired at least 3 times a day. Throughout the summer I spent my mornings watching Pokemon. A few months later was watching DBZ, Gundam Wing, Digimon, etc...

Eight years after my first experience with Pokemon and 535 anime series later I was lurking for pics to keep with me forever. I came to the realization that there could be an event in my life where anime would no longer be with me and I wanted a way help preserve it. I searched the internet for safe sites and descent looking pics that I could keep. I found a site called iiChan and I began to liberate them of their pics. While I was cleaning out of their pics I noticed someone put up a link to /e/ on 4Chan, I followed it until I reached /a/. Friend lent me InuYasha Movie Two, watched it, became hooked, saw Love Hina as a first sub, and gradually moved on to better series

I was on /u/ for a few years, then hopped back and forth during TTGL Saturdays, and finally moved here during GEASS SUNDAYS.

Saw Patlabor on TV and was interested. Then I saw some tapes of it at a video rental place, there was a small little shelf with about 20-50 tapes, and I watched all of them, when I got through the episodes of Eva they had, I was hooked. From then I started looking up shit streams of things like Captain Harlock online. Anime sucks today.

Downloaded Azumanga on a whim, fell in love with slice of life/comedy shit. I really enjoy drawing and art n shit, so finding "cartoons" that weren't about fucking dumb crap on nickelodeon was pretty tight. I branched off into everything else after exhausting everything decent in that genre.

Pretty sure I found /a/ after I'd been using rapidsearch through 4chan for awhile(waaaay the fuck back when that still existed), to satisfy my lust for comics. Been stuck browsing with you fags ever since

Yeah, FLCL was the first thing other than DBZ I watched, I remember the night it aired on Adult Swim. I couldn't believe what I was watching, it was so... different than anything I had ever seen.
    >> Anonymous 05/16/09(Sat)22:42 No.21303688
I use to watch Dragon Ball (the original, like Emperor Pilaf, etc) when it was on tv in the mornings a long time ago (mid 90s, I think). I watched DBZ and all that other Toonami shit when it was on, but I didn't really get into anime and manga as a whole until Viz published the original DB in the US and I saw the third volume on the shelf andwas like "HOLY SHIT, I USED TO WATCH THIS!" (I was retarded back then, and only bought the 2nd and 3rd volumes, until I realized I needed the first too.)

This spiraled into a manga addiction, and many wasted dollars on more Viz and Tokyopop merchandise like Rurouni Kenshin and Love Hina. I acquired the Love Hina anime when I was in middle school, but I thought it was shit (even though I loved the manga), and didn't really appreciate anime until the summer of the huge blackout that affected the whole northeastern US.

Adult Swim was airing FLCL, and I was fucking engrossed, until the power went out for fucking three or four days. I missed a couple episodes, and this started my descent into watching and acquiring anime regularly.

By the way, speaking of FLCL, where is that .gif from in >>21302991 ?

The Mamimi cosplayer is calling to me.

    >Tell me the story of how you got into anime.
I used to play a lot of MMORPG's so being on the internet + being up all night with Adult Swim on got me into anime, really.

    >And for bonus points, how you ended up in /a/.
Someone had a last.fm pic in their signature on a forum I used to frequent, which led me to last.fm in mid '06. From there I discovered Loliserv through somebody's profile, which is basically a small imageboard of /g/ frequenters. Discovered 4chan in late '06 through it. Back in the day, I owned a Sega Genesis, and my friend a SNES. He, of course, had the superior system. (Back then, I still had friends, though not many.) I went over to his house to play games like Super Mario RPG, Contra III, Star Fox, and Mario Kart. At a certain point each day I went over, however, he paused the game, turned back to TV mode, and watched these weird cartoons from Japan in syndication on a UPN or some other misc channel.

The lineup included Ronin Warriors, Dragon Ball Z, and Samurai Pizza Cats. DBZ was already in the middle of the Namek arc. I couldn't figure out what gender Freeza was. This was during the second season of the Ocean dub, by the way. Peter Kelamis was Goku. He remains Goku to me. I once confused Goku and Yamcha, because they both wore the same gi and had similar hair. DBZ didn't really strike me as too great a show at this time.

Ronin Warriors was different. I was a huge fan of the show, even though I started watching in the middle of it. Probably further beyond that, because the first episode I watched was one in which Anubis, having taken the mantle of The Ancient One, fought Dais, the one with the spider armor, while Mia and Yuli looked on. I was really impressed. When it all reran, I watched the whole thing from beginning to end, the first anime series I watched in entirety, and the first I was a big fan of.

DBZ fandom came when DBZ reran the first time. This was still before CN existed. I was hooked. Then CN came, then Toonami came, then I got hooked on shows like Outlaw Star, Gundam Wing, and Tenchi Muyo. Sci-Fi Channel had Saturday Anime. Encore Action Channel had an anime block. AOL had an anime section, dedicated to stuff like Tank Police, A-Ko, and Bubblegum Crisis. Suncoast video store began carrying anime. I was in heaven. I stopped calling it "Japanimation" around this time.

That's how I got into it.
    >> Anonymous 05/16/09(Sat)22:45 No.21303729
anime: first exposure was voltron, robotech, and saber riders back when i was very young (late 80s). during senior year of high school, i checked out ghost in the shell and akira on a whim and decided this "japanimation" stuff wasn't bad. that was over ten years ago. since then i've just been falling further and further into the abyss.

/a/: heard about 4chan on various other anime boards, quickly got used to the lack of conventional e-drama, post count/join date bullshit.

My hamster died, dad bought me Pokemon Red to calm me down. Loved it, got into the Pokemon anime because of it, was already familiar with the internet so I visited Pokemon websites and found out about Sailor Moon through them. Watched it, loved it. Third anime I watched and my introduction to "serious business animu" was The Big O when it was on Toonami and plenty more followed. My favorite genre is still magical girls, though.

Ended up on 4chan and /a/ just through the word spreading through the internet, considering I've been an internet junkie for about 10 years now popular sites haven't really escaped my sight since then.
