03/07/09(Sat)20:03 No.19440733My
mother and father had split up when I was 8, and I spent the next two
years shuffling between my mother's house and my father's house. My
father's an old-school kind of guy. A man's man. He worked as a
carpenter because it afforded him the opportunity to sneak in little
pieces of his tremendous store of mathematical and practical
engineering knowledge. Of course, he wasn't just a nail-banger: he
managed the crew that built a Filene's and the Square One Mall in
Saugus, MA.
Anyway, there was a lot of political bullshit going
on between my mother's and my father's families, and me and my brother
got caught in the middle. My mother moved us up to the middle of
bum-fuck Maine, where there's nothing to do and (most important) nobody
who knew who we were. I attended junior high, then high school,
independently discovering and becoming fascinated with anime. I went to
college, became a very early user of the then-brand-new 4chan, and
simply absorbed as much anime as I possibly could.
Then this
August I happened to run into him when I was down in Mass for a court
appointment. I hadn't seen the man from the time I was 12. When he
asked what I was up to, I replied, "Oh, not much: working, paying
bills, hanging out, you know". He put his hand on my shoulder and said
to me, "Son, there's only three things in this life that you've gotta
do: smoke, swear, and fuck women." |
