...Oh what the fuck, that's not even fair. OVAs vs. TV shows? Of course they look like shit in comparison. I'd like to see him make a more fair one. 80's TV shows looked like ass. I love me some SDF Macross and UC Gundam and City Hunter and what not, but they do not look like anything the stuff on the right.

O wow, comparing the epic high-budget single motion picture DYRL to the 50 episode Gundam SEED?
    >> Anonymous 02/09/09(Mon)01:41 No.18723952
    Well, it's simple. Shit sells.

It's easier to put out something that isn't great but people will give a chance to, and a niche audience will form for.

Than something that someone's put a lot of work into that will appeal to, likely, less mass audience but grow a more limited (though loyal) fanbase.

It's how entertainment works. I mean, you guys have been out in the world, have you ever wondered why there's so many romantic comedies? Same thing.
    >> Anonymous 02/09/09(Mon)01:42 No.18723992
Comparing tv shows with mediocre animation to OVAs is weak. And shows desperation.

Animation is far better looking and diverse now than it was during the "old". This is a fact.

The Girl Who Leapt Through Time had a really interesting animation style. The less detail - more fluid motion thing worked out very well in the film, but if we get a glut of shows that look like that, it probably won't be as good.

Go back to your shitty American television.

Style and detail is much more important than pure fluidity of movement. Style is what's ultimately going to set the tone and overall aesthetic appeal for a series. You cannot make up for bad stylistic choices, but you can definitely make up for less animation though things like well placed stills and camera angles.

    It's a big debatable issue.

We can still have high quality releases, but the trend right now is for flat colors probably because it's easier when you're animating digitally. I just happen to enjoy the late 80's and early 90's character designs. Stuff from before 85 does start to age rapidly though.
