The German language coined this term for being ashamed of the actions of someone who isn't ashamed of these actions. Someone acting like a retard and not minding it at all, whereas someone else is ashamed of just witnessing this even if he's not involved in the slightest. Like watching Ryuuji rushing to the stage.
    >> Anonymous 01/02/09(Fri)16:36 No.17640136
Not anime but when I was reading the da capo vn. It saddens me to think that some people are actually entertained by this mindnumbing moe blob shit, the same tired scenarios. perfect for the retards on /jp/

My native language has an equivalent expression as well. I think it was translated as "sympathetic shame" somewhere.

Well, since English has schadenfreude, I might start using fremdschamen in conversation. See if it becomes a loanword.

Some new anime a friend of mine was showing me. She said you guys liked it.
I don't know what it was called. Some space chick showed up in a short woman-looking mech and married herself to the main character, and there was a childhood friend character, and he was all like "Gimme my normal life back!" and such and such.

A couple times during Black Lagoon for various reasons but my real answer is Code Geass with the plot contrivance on Euphy, but then I had a nice laugh after so it balanced out.

I was searching for an English equivalent of the word as the notion itself is a universal one, but I didn't find a proper one. 'Sympathetic shame' has a positive connotation, whereas 'fremdschämen' has a negative one. Then again, English is my fourth language, so I'm not sure at all.
