If you let them tramp on free speech just because you don't like what's being said, you're only hurting yourself in the future.

Indeed. Freedom of speech means freedom of all speech, not just freedom of speech for ideas you find acceptable, or that the general public finds acceptable.

Just got off the phone with the 800 number of the defense fund. I extended a hand as a experienced doujin importer/collector, guy on the line told me they have a strong team already formed consisting of artists, several lawyers, and free speech expert folk. They were ready to start on December 2nd, but due to schedule conflicts they had a extension to February 2009. We will know by the end of February most likely. This shit is real folks, if this man is convicted it can permanently fuck up the manga/doujin market in the USA.

First, let me say that this has been posted and reposted and reposted so many times, it's almost as common to see this in /a/ as Minorin appreciation threads. However, this is insanely important, and there are still those out there who haven't seen this, and they should.

This, as well as any other censorship case, is deeply disturbing to me. Not only as a reader of manga that, let's face it, many people would find offensive (Kodomo no Jikan would make most people faint on the spot), but as an aspiring artist.

I've drawn nude figures. Hell, I've taken an entire class dedicated to the drawing of naked people. Several times, since I felt I needed more practice on the subject. During the class, the instructor would bring in models to pose nude for us, and most of the time, they are students who the instructor has taught/is teaching in another class.

Well, last semester, we had a model who posed for us several times, a nice girl named Ellie. We didn't think anything of her, since we'd all seen several models at this point. Hell, during the mid-period break, she stood there butt naked talking with the other students. But then, it was revealed that she was 17. She'd made it into college early by taking summer school to get ahead, and had actually been going to college for about a year at that point.

Well, one of the students, an older lady in her 50's, was outraged. She reported this to the police. The instructor was taken in for questioning, as were all of us students. Right now, the instructor (Who did not know of her age either) is facing child pornography charges for having us all create what the whistleblower calls "lewd drawings of a minor".

    Continued in next post.

    >>17100955
If you'd read some of the letters she sent in to them, you'd think the instructor was forcing everyone to sit down and draw porn all day. But it's not, it's art.

Now, lolicon manga is definitely a different league from this, especially the more pornographic doujinshi out there. Not only are the characters younger, but there's not a model for it. But does this make it worse, or better?

My personal opinion is that anything should be legal in works of fantasy, as long as they make it clear that it is intended to be nothing more than fantasy. Let Handley go. If he actually molests a girl, then it's his own fault, for being too stupid to tell the difference between reality and a manga, but until then, the man is innocent.

But seriously, I don't know if the case will get too far. Apparently she was an emancipated minor, and she says she knew the risks. Besides, for actual art, they tend to go easier. It isn't. Take a jury of random people, most of them probably with families of their own, and ask them if a lolicon manga is obscene. If they say yes, you lose the case.
