In the final stages of starting an anime club at my school. but there's a minor problem.

The school already has one. It's full of Bleach-fags, Naruto-fags, dubfags, etc.

I need to convince the assistant principal to allow another.

I think I'll go with something like this.

    "You like football right?"
He says yes, because he does.
"What do you think about lacrosse?"
He says he's not a fan, because he's not.
"So how would you feel if there were just one sports club at school, and people who didn't understand sports were in charge, and grouped football with lacrosse?. There are different genres and styles of anime, just like there are different sports, and the club I'm wanting to start is in sharp contrast to the current anime club."

I doubt it will win him over.

But Bleach-fags, Naruto-fags, dubfags, etc. are the only ones who attend anime clubs, OP.

It was when I realized this that I quit attending the anime club at my college. And a month later, I first came to 4chan.

How about you learn to compromise instead and try suggesting different anime. Just because they like Bleach, Naruto and dubs doesn't mean they can't learn to like other stuff. Odds are they simply haven't seen anything else.

Two tips for getting a decent anime club, based on current experience:
    1) Advertise only with fairly obscure (from a western standpoint) anime. Don't put Bleach, Naruto, once-piece on your adverts.
    2) Try and keep the group fairly small. Too big, and you'll just end up showing mainstream stuff to cater to as many of your group as possible. When it's small, it's more of a social gathering where you're experimenting with the anime suggested by people that you may have never experienced otherwise.

I feel sorry for you, OP. My college has an awesome anime club. While we do have some Narutards (well, some fat yaoi fangirls who love Naruto/Bleach/etc) we've also got some cool people. We've got pretty much every side of anime fandom from the moebullshit expert to the mech-head. In addition to our anime-watching meeting, we also have a weekly social meeting to hang out and play games and such.

We stay away from dubs and only show subbed things. For legal reasons, we only show R1, licensed shows. If we really, really wanna show something that's not-licensed, we buy the R2s and live-sub them ourselves.

Honestly, I think our club is one of the best college anime clubs out there.

I'm at university at the moment and I help to run the anime society there. Sure we have Shounen fags but we never let them run the show. Once a week we have a screening in the biggest lecture theatre available to us.

We decided to show to begin with Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei (x2), DiGi Charat (x2), Tengen Toppa Gurren Laggan (x2) and a random first episode from the current season of anime (last week it was Ga-rei Zero). On the pretence of "broadening horizons and catering for every taste." it's going down quite well so far.

That is exactly what I thought you think elitist means. But it doesn't. /a/ does this all the time though, so I can see where you went wrong.

It has a very simple definition in fact:
    >Advocacy of or reliance on the leadership and dominance of an élite (in a society, or in any body or class of persons). Hence élitist n. and a.

So it's someone who thinks an elite group is a good thing. It is unrelated to someone who thinks he is part of the elite.

Drop everything other than NHK, and add Evangelion.
It's the club where all the members mysteriously disappear! Accompanied by notices in the local newspaper.

    i loved both personally
    >> Anonymous 11/03/08(Mon)20:34 No.16090324
In my day, us weaboo knew better than to go to school clubs for anime.

    Science club, ftw.

they're both appreciated by the people who have actually watched them, as opposed to the people who read a synopsis on wikipedia and decide to troll it due to lack of MOE~~~~

OP, do you really need a club?
Cant you just meet with friends and talk/watch?
    >> Anonymous 11/03/08(Mon)20:36 No.16090378
    >>16090321
No, the implication of getting too into both of them and completely relating yourself to it...I think you know what happens.

why do you need funding for an animu club? it's not like you would have any expenses

The only reason that comes to mind about people enjoying subs over dubs is that, for the most part, people on /a/ don't speak or understand conversational japanese. Thus, there could be someone who sounds god awful to someone who does speak the language, but it's all gibberish to everyone else. However, most people, I'm assuming, understand english, and english VAs suck for the most part.

Don't do it OP, you'll make your life a living hell trying to set this thing up and piss off everyone. My advice, set up a moviie or film society, and screen some anime, mostly real films. The Animatrix is a good intro (I know, I know) but give a talk before and after every anime movie, introducing some of the directors, about the style and then tell them some stuff similar to it.

That makes me sad. The one at my college mirrors that of OP's. At first I was all "well, i've heard good things about them", then I frowned as I realized the club consisted of just watching the next 2 episodes of some overly drawn out series before swapping to the next 2 episodes of some overly drawn out series to swapping to the next....

I really wouldn't have minded about going to one if there was only a little structure and order and not a bunch of fat faggots jumping on seats and screaming stupid shit out
