[The novels] will be advertised in the Alloy and dELia*s catalogs, which target tween girls, and promoted on MySpace and Facebook as well as a dedicated website. In addition, the publisher will promote Haruhi launch parties on websites popular with teen girls, with an offer of free gifts for girls who host them.

    *facepalm*

Anime (this is important, learn this finally, faggots) has no standard demographic divisions, and therefore cannot be considered as one or another.

So the first time you hear the concept of Halloween when you're a kid, your brain can't even understand it. "What is this? What did you say? Someone's giving out candy? Who's giving out candy? EVERYONE WE KNOW is giving out candy? I gotta be a part of this!"

In his first picture book, comedian and bestselling author Jerry Seinfeld captures on the page his hilarious views on Halloween, from Superman costumes that look like pajamas to the agony of getting bad trick-or-treat candy. Seinfeld's tale resonates with vivid experiences of a night every kid loves.

Both kids and adults will eat up Jerry's distinct and unwritten rules of Halloween. Hamilton King award-winning illustrator, James Bennett's outlandish illustrations perfectly depict these unique observations, reminding us why Jerry Seinfeld is still the funniest man alive.

Does it really matter to you that much that some 12 year old girls might be reading the same book as you? Standard business practice. The size of the anime and manga market is already limited. There's nothing wrong with marketing to as many people as possible to maximise profit. You're effectively saying that the publisher should just accept the existing small market and not try everything in their power to sell THEIR product, which is absurd. Imagine telling Nintendo, for example, not to market the Wii, because it is already mainstream.

Spare me if they succeed in marketing something to tween girls just because it has cute art.
And even if some girl at that age should buy and enjoy it, wouldn't it just be just another book for them. Do they really think those people will wait 3 months and than buy another one. In 3 months, it will be all forgotten.

And I'm not taking the side of the publishers. It just strikes me as strange that people are making a big deal over nothing. "Oh my god! 12 year old girls reading Haruhi! Oh no! My favourite anime is ruined!" - which is funny considering the number of Youtube videos you'll find of 12-13 year old girls doing Hare Hare Yukai (or whatever it's called).

also because they know american men are not good targets for anything that could possibly be perceived as a "cute romance story," or even just "romance," if they're actually trying to make it mainstream.

not that i dont agree they are completely going in the wrong direction and ruining the material for any audience but their target audience(that's the effect of aiming it at preteen girls). give it some different cover art, word the summaries well, and maybe they'd have a chance with the audience it was actually directed at(young teen men-young adult men).

The question here is, why bother to try and mainstream it at all?

Yes, I know; company wants profits and all that jazz.

But manga/anime publishers don't pull that shit. Gurren Lagann is (arguably) one of the most recognised hit in the last few years but aside from a dub, they didn't try and force it onto an audience that usually doesn't watch it.

Same for Lucky Star. An odd license considering the audience, but it was a hit. It got dubbed, it's being released; no big fanfare or attempts at attracting people who have no interest in it.

Haruhi has been around since 2006. The novels, since 2003. Subbed, dubbed, released, new series soon. Why the fuck would you pull this shit now?

I pay for good translations, so they'd better fucking keep up on that part.

    >Yes, I know; company wants profits and all that jazz.

You probably already know, but you answered your own question.

Maybe also because they think that in order to make something truly mainstream you have to target younger audiences first so that when they get older they might come back to it. That doesn't work here with what Americans consider to be cartoons, however, and I doubt they're planning that far ahead anyways considering they're just a small-time publishing company(right?).

I'm pretty sure they're just looking for an audience to which it will appeal to most considering American culture.

    >Monti isn’t concerned that readers unfamiliar with manga conventions will be thrown off by references to Japanese culture, so there will be no translation notes to explain things like school uniforms or the term “moe.”

No translation notes? They'll "pick it up in context"? Americans are dumb as bricks. They need everything explained very simply to them.

Also, /a/ should be happy, now we'll be able to bond with 12-year-old girls over something.

Unless they fuck with the translation, which is why we are bitching, it's not going to make any money off little girls, and so it won't make any money. And then the other novels won't be released.
Whereas had they stuck with the intended target audience in the first place it'd have turned a modest profit and it would've been fine.
If they want to get rich off of little girls, sell them Hannah Montana dildos.

Yen Press is the other company that helped them gain this license. They don't make any effort to mainstream shit with the exception of their monthly manga magazine.

Little Brown Books is suffering from a severe case of USI and this entire endevour will be a failure in gaining a new target audience.

If they fuck up/bastardise/dumb down the translations, then they'll also lose a chunk of their core audience. Those idiotic dub-fags who buy anything will of course eat this shit up though, so they'll still gain a large revenue from those 'HARUHI IS SO KAWAII DESU~!!!! XD' types.

This is just the beginning. After Haruhi became the new trend, the next thing will be the Key Moeblob shit. They will even air edited version on television. Every time there is a joke, you hear the audience (that isn't even existing) laugh, just like in real shitty American comedy.

They're over ambitious. It will blow up in their face. Their project will lose stability for future releases.
