continued Bleach: +HUGE CAST IS HUGE. Lots of interesting
side characters, but none of them get enough screen time. Once, this
didn't matter so much, because the main cast were also interesting in
likable, but now they are just generic shells stealing away time from
better characters. +NO BACKGROUNDS. Character design is alright, but
as Kubo found his footing he has sort of fallen into sameface. Also a
lot of the Hollow designs and Arrancar releases just look lazy. Spreads
can vary, but most are just Kubo putting characters in different
outfits. +Bleach for good while didn't really have a plot. There was
no looming threat to defeat, there was just individual characters
smashing into one another trying to get to their various goals. This
changed after the Soul Society arc when Aizen opened the floodgates for
the grand trollfest that is Bleach's current plot. It was also when
Bleach took a nosedive in quality, though it still has its moments.
One
Piece: +Once again, we have a huge cast, so screentime is a problem.
There's a lot of questions remaining about our antagonists, and many
big players haven't been introduced or have been barely shown. In terms
of protagonists, the only ones that are all that original are Robin and
Franky, but the rest of the crew are still likable (Luffy gets on a lot
of nerves due to being outright generic though). +Oda's artstyle is
very soft and cartoonish. Personally, I enjoy it and find it fits the
overall mood of the series, but I can certainly see why one would not.
It's also interesting to see what he puts out when he does random shit
like the watercolor spreads and drawing Snoop Dog in Chopper's hat. +One
Piece doesn't really have an overreaching plot beyond "LET'S HAVE AN
ADVENTURE" and some political stuff that rarely comes to the foreground
anyway. It, like early Bleach, is almost entirely character driven. |
