From time to time Be releases minor software updates and makes them available for downloading. This BeOS Boot Floppy (x86) supplements the BeOS Release 3.2 Update and updates your boot floppy disk for your PC. This software update was released on July 29, 1998. Description This update contains updates to the BeOS Release 3 boot floppy disk. For information regarding the specific changes and improvements, see the BeOS Release 3.2 Update page: Who Needs This Update All BeOS Release 3.x users should have a current BeOS Boot Floppy. This update is for the BeOS running on Intel Architecture only. Getting and Using the Boot Floppy The BeOS Boot Floppy (x86) consists of a singe floppy image file. Creating an updated boot floppy consists of downloading the image file and using the BeOS command line to copy the image onto a floppy disk. 1.Download the BeOS Boot Floppy (x86) image archive from the BeDepot.com web site: Download software archive: BeOS Boot Floppy for Intel Architecture Size: 158 KB 2.Decompress the archive using Expander. You should be able to simply double-click the downloaded archive, and click the Expand button in Expander. 3.Launch Terminal, the BeOS command line application. 4.Change directory (cd) to the directory that contains the downloaded image file. Most likely you downloaded the file to your home directory. That's the default directory for Terminal, too, so if the image file is in /home, you don't need to cd to a different directory. 5.Insert a floppy disk into your computer's floppy disk drive. 6.Copy the image file data to the floppy disk using the following command: dd if=intel_boot_floppy_r3.2.img of=/dev/disk/floppy/raw You can copy the command from your browser window and paste it into Terminal if you are unclear about the above command. Your floppy disk drive will whir for a while, and then stop. 7.Flush all of the data to the floppy disk (just to be safe) with the following command: sync 8.Use the new boot floppy in place of the boot floppy that came with your BeOS Release 3 CD. Notes for Users of Other Operating Systems If for some reason you cannot boot into the BeOS to create your boot floppy (perhaps you use only the boot floppy to boot the BeOS, instead of a boot manager), you can still create a BeOS boot floppy, using either Linux or Windows. For Linux users: The steps are essentially the same, except in Step 6, use this command instead of the one given above: dd if=intel_boot_floppy_r3.2.img of=/dev/fd0 For Windows users: 1.Download and decompress the disk image archive, using the download panel above, and your favorite archive handler. Be sure you download the archive using a binary mode transfer! 2.Download the RAWRITE.EXE utility from the FreeBSD web site: ftp://ftp.freebsd.org/.25/FreeBSD/tools/ 3.Copy RAWRITE.EXE to the same directory as the disk image file. 4.Open an MS-DOS command line promt, and start RAWRITE.EXE using the following command: rawrite 5.When asked for the source file, type: intel_boot_floppy_r3.2.img 6.When asked for the destination drive, type: a: (Or whatever drive name you have configured as your floppy disk drive.)
