BeOS R3 to R3.2 Update (Intel) We recommend that you print out these instructions before beginning. Since your configuration will require a system reboot before completing the update, having a printout of the complete instructions will ensure that you know what to do at each step in the process. This software update was released on July 29, 1998. BeOS Release 3 to 3.2 Update Instructions The following instructions will take you step-by-step through downloading and installing the various pieces required by your system to update you to BeOS Release 3.2. Please don't skip through them to the download links. The update can be tricky for some systems, and failure to follow the instructions carefully can result in your system becoming unbootable. We strongly recommend that you read them through, and make sure you understand the steps you need to follow, before you begin downloading and installing the Update. Configuration Details These instructions for installing the BeOS Release 3.2 Update have been custom created for your configuration. If your configuration is different from what is described below, you should go back to the BeOS Update Assistant Form, and re-enter your configuration information. Your hardware platform: Intel Architecture Your current BeOS version: BeOS Release 3 BeOS Release 3 to 3.2 Update Instructions Detail 1.VERY IMPORTANT: Build an updated BeOS Boot Floppy, using the instructions on the BeOS Boot Floppy for Intel Architecture page. This step is extremely important. Due to bugs and limitations in some PCs' BIOSes, it is possible for the BeOS Release 3.1 to 3.2 Update to render your system unbootable in certain rare circumstances. This problem only manifests itself when booting from the hard drive; you can boot as normal using the BeOS Boot Floppy. So make sure you have a current BeOS Boot Floppy before installing the Update. If you should encounter this problem, where you can boot using the BeOS Boot Floppy, but cannot boot from your hard drive, see the BeOS Boot Loader Workaround page for a utility which can apply a fix for this BIOS-related problem. 2.VERY IMPORTANT: If you have the DOSfs file system add-on installed, uninstall it. You might have installed this file system add-on to allow the BeOS to access your Windows disk(s). The BeOS Release 3.2 includes a similar file system add-on, and unfortunately the two add-ons cannot co-exist on your system. You must uninstall DOSfs before you try to install the Release 3.2 Update, or you may not be able to boot your system afterwards. The DOSfs add-on can be found at /home/config/add-ons/kernel/file_systems/dos (or, if you installed DOSfs somewhat incorrectly, it could be at /beos/system/add-ons/kernel/file_systems/dos), and should be moved to the Trash. The author of DOSfs has decided not to continue development of his add-on, since Be is providing an official DOS/Windows file system add-on, so you won't find any use for keeping this one around. 3.Download the BeOS Release 3.2 Update packages from the BeDepot.com web site: Download software packages: BeOS Release 3 --> Release 3.1 Updater Size: 6.55 MB BeOS Release 3.1 --> Release 3.2 Updater Size: 505.6 KB The BeOS Release 3.2 Update comes in two packages, one that updates your system to BeOS Release 3.1 and a second that updates it to BeOS Release 3.2. You will install each of them, one at a time. Be sure to download both packages! (Note: There is an additional zip archive with updated BeOS Laucher tools for Windows. To completely update your system, you will install the BeOS Release 3.2 package in the BeOS, reboot your system into Windows and install the Launcher items there. Just follow the below instructions in their entirety.) 4.Double-click the BeOS 3.1 Updater package, named beos_updater3.1_x86.pkg, to open it with SoftwareValet. This package is the first part of the Update, and will bring your system to BeOS Release 3.1. The second part of the update will bring you up to Release 3.2. You must have SoftwareValet on your system to install the Update package. SoftwareValet was installed on your system when you installed the BeOS, but if you deleted it, you can copy it from your BeOS Release 3 CD, by copying the /BeOS R3 CD/demos/SoftwareValet folder to your hard disk. 5.Dismiss the instructions by clicking the OK button. The instructions on this page supersede the instructions included with the Updater package. You should follow the instructions here, not those instructions. 6.Select the disk onto which you wish to install the BeOS Release 3.1 Update. This will be the disk on which you have already installed BeOS Release 3. 7.Click the Begin button. 8.Review, if you wish, the contents of the Update in the Preview Install window. This isn't necessary, but it will be interesting if you're interested in seeing exactly what files will be installed where on your system. 9.Click the Continue Installation button to start the installation. 10.At the first "XXX already exists" dialog, choose "Replace Existing", check the "Don't ask again" checkbox, and click the "Continue Installation" button. Note: If you are a CodeWarrior owner, you do not want to replace your installed copy of the BeIDE (or you'll need to re-install CodeWarrior). When the "BeIDE already exists" dialog appears (it's the first one), choose "Skip Item" and click "Continue Installation". Then do the "Replace Existing"/"Don't ask again" thing as described above. The Update contains more recent files than those that exist on your system. The outdated files on your system need to be replaced. If you do not click the "Don't ask again" button, you'll get this dialog once for every file that needs to be replaced. It's a lot of files; you'll probably get bored doing it manually. 11.When the installation finishes, quit SoftwareValet. 12.VERY IMPORTANT: Launch Terminal, and at the command line prompt type: ls -lR / (that's "ell ess minus ell ARR slash") This step is very important, as it flushes important changes out to your disk. Failure to do this can cause problems when you reboot. (It's actually necessary because of a small bug in the BeOS, which is fixed in BeOS Release 3.2, but you need to do it this once during the first part of the Update, since BeOS Release 3.2 isn't installed quite yet.) 13.Reboot your BeOS system. The first part of the Update replaces many files which belong to the running copy of the BeOS. You need to reboot and be running BeOS Release 3.1 before you can install the second part of the Update to install BeOS Release 3.2. 14.Double-click the BeOS 3.2 Updater package, named beos_3.2_updater_x86.pkg, to open it with SoftwareValet. 15.Dismiss the instructions by clicking the OK button. The instructions on this page are more comprehensive than the instructions included with the Updater package. You should follow the instructions here, not those instructions. 16.Select the disk onto which you wish to install the BeOS Release 3.2 Update. This will be the disk on which you have already installed BeOS Release 3.1. 17.Click the Begin button. 18.Review, if you wish, the contents of the Update in the Preview Install window. This isn't necessary, but it will be interesting if you're interested in seeing exactly what files will be installed where on your system. 19.Click the Continue Installation button to start the installation. 20.At the first "XXX already exists" dialog, choose "Replace Existing", check the "Don't ask again" checkbox, and click the "Continue Installation" button. The Update contains more recent files than those that exist on your system. The outdated files on your system need to be replaced. If you do not click the "Don't ask again" button, you'll get this dialog once for every file that needs to be replaced. It's enough files that you'll probably get bored doing it manually. 21.When the installation finishes, quit SoftwareValet. 22.Reboot your BeOS system. The Release 3.1 to Release 3.2 Update replaces many files which belong to the running copy of the BeOS. Rebooting your system immediately after installing the Update is important, because if you try to use your system without rebooting, unpredictable behaviour will ensue. It probably won't be pretty... 23.Boot into your Windows environment (Windows 95/98 or Windows NT). 24.Download the BeOS Launcher tools for Windows from the BeDepot.com web site: Download software archive: BeOS Launcher Tools for Windows Size: 157 KB This zip archive contains an update for the Windows 95/98 BeOS Launcher utility, and instructions for updating your boot menu on Windows NT systems. 25.Unzip the BeOS Launch tools update archive. There are a variety of Windows tools for working with zip archives. If you don't already have one, PKZip by PKWare is a fine tool. 26.Install the update to the BeOS Launch tools for Windows: If you are using Windows 95/98: If you are using the BeLaunch utility provided in the BEOS_TOOLS directory of the BeOS for Intel CD, you need to replace a single file in your current installation. Copy the file zbeos from the BeOS Launch tools for Windows update archive to the BeLaunch directory on your Windows partition, and confirm any message to replace an existing file with the same name. If you are using Windows NT: If you added the BeOS to your Windows NT Boot Manager, you must add it again after updating your BeOS installation to Release 3.2. Follow the instructions given under "Adding BeOS to your NT Boot Manager" on page 26 of the BeOS Installation Guide that came with your BeOS for Intel CD. 27.Enjoy the BeOS Release 3.2! And don't stop looking for the Secret About BeOS Box! After you have installed the BeOS Release 3.2 Update, you may wish to install the Release 3.1/3.2 Optional Items Directory Update. See that page for details on what the update contains, and instructions for installing it.
