Part 2 in the unfortunate happenings of one Jack
The Ripper from Houston, Texas. The following
article was taken from the Houston Post sometime

Socialite Backs Son In Credit Card Abuse Case

Houston Socialite Carolyn Farb said Thursday she
does not believe her 18 year old son who is under
investigation for credit card abuse, has committed
any crime.

"I love him and I dont think he's done anything
wrong," Farb said. "My son is a very bright young
man and i'm behind him 100 percent."

Investigators with the Harris County DA'S Office
executed a search warrant at Farb's River Oaks home
earlier this week and seized a home computer and
computer disks.

Assistant DA Greg Anderson said Farb's son is sus-
pected of using the computer to learn individual
long distance access codes. Credit card abuse is a
third degree felony with a maximum punishment of
ten years in prison and a $5000 fine.

Anderson said his office was notified by Advan-
ced Telecommunications Corporation (ATC) that a
telephone at the Farb home was being used to
try to determine the codes of the firms customers.

(note-can any of you imagine what JTR was doing
certainly not hacking out codes - why that's
illegal??)

When the search warrant was executed, Anderson
said the computer was hooked to a phone and was
automatically running various numbers through the
phone lines.

Defense attorney Dick Deguerin, who was called to
the Farb home shortly after investigators arrived,
said he saw no crime being committed. He said Farb's
son is a "computer genius" who was "exploring all
facets of computers"

"All they can show is that he was gathering infor-
mation," DeGuerin said.

Anderson said the use of computers to make free
long distance calles is common problem that has
resulted in the recent indictments of more than
a dozen people in the Houston area.

Anderson said the culprits reange from youthful
hackers out for a thrill to middle aged people
who want to call family overseas.

But, Anderson said the incessant dialing of numbers
alerts the long distance company. The company then
can have Southwestern Bell put a tracer on the phone
line that is dialing the numbers.

There is a lesson to be learned here!)
