From: Ny Transfer News To: All Concerned Msg #74, 04:13am Jan-17-91 Subject: CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE BASICS lorlando News of Actions for Mideast Activists 8:10 pm Jan 16, 1991 GUIDELINES FOR NONVIOLENT ACTION For the purpose of building trust and to create a foundation of safety so that we know what to expect of each other in the planned action, we offer the following guidelines: 1. We will act nonviolently. We will seek to express our feelings without verbally or physically abusing anyone. 2. We will participate, whenever possible, in nonviolent action preparation before the action to prepare and orient ourselves and to share necessary, action-specific information. 3. We agree that we will not destroy property at the action. However, many of us in the nonviolent resistance movement recognize the validity of this tactic. 4. We will not bring alcohol or other non-prescription drugs. Alcohol and drugs at an action can endanger ourselves and others, legally and physically. They can also hamper our ability to communicate and work together calmly and with clarity. 5. We will not bring firearms or other weapons to the action. 6. Participants who risk arrest recognize that they may face legal consequences as a result of their actions and are prepared to accept these consequences 7. We will not run. Running causes panic. 8. We will not light fires. Fires cause panic. The above guidelines were developed for use in actions planned at the Nevada Test Site and then subsequently modified by other direct action groups. Impromptu civil disobedience groups, take advantage of the often long wait for arraignment; make a phone tree, create an affinity group that can organize and be an experienced participant in future actions.
