Hi John.

Mike Smith informs me that you have supported his version of events that I am an ex-MI5 employee who has dudded him.

Let me put you right!

I have never worked for MI5 and I have never done any deals with them as far as I know. I did know Peter Wright however, cos my publisher published his book Spycatcher and I was introduced to him and his wife Lois.

But about 6 months ago I offered to help Mike put a case to the CCRC, and over time we, or better still, I, discovered many problems with Mike's case, one was that his appeal lawyer misrepresented facts at his appeal, another that Prof Lewis could not be considered an expert, indeed, there was a strong possibility of Mike winning an appeal against his convictions.

But Mike is a very good liar.

What Mike has done is steal material from his employer and sell it, that's all. He is nothing more than a petty thief. He stole the stuff he found in his desk at HRC and started to sell it. HRC worked mainly on government contracts and had a *top secret* clearance. Mike however did not have a *top secret* clearance, so Mike had to steal *top secret* stuff which was made convenient for him when HRC gave him the desk of one of their top boffin, who had just retired when Mike started work there. Mike simply pinched all the papers he found in the desk.

Mike then made 8 visits to a buyer (who turned out to be a 5 man) and gave stuff over for which he was paid 25000 pounds. This is hardly rocket science. The quality of the stuff Mike sold can be gauged from the fact that Mike still has in his possession the ARM missile specifications (the ARM is the forerunner of the Alarm missile and is still today a first strike weapon).

And of course Mike argues that Prof Lewis should not have been able to say that the ARM was the Alarm. That hardly matters, nor do any of the other very good points we made out for his Appeal. I suppose getting 25 years imprisonment indicates that Mike is some sort of high level spy, but the plain truth is he is is a petty thief who got up the judge's nose by pinching classified material and got three sentences made consecutive. (He was convicted on three counts). If the judge had wanted to he could have made the counts Mike was convicted on run concurrent and Mike would have served about three years.

No doubt the judge, like myself, thought Mike was a wilful liar. If you want confirmation of our conclusions simply ask.
