The map and photos show the site and preparations for the Republican National Convention at Madison Square Garden, New York City, to begin on August 30, 2004: http://www.2004nycgop.org/

The street-level photos below were taken by Cryptome on 29 July 2004. Photos 1 and 2 two show a temporary elevated walkway being constructed across 8th Avenue between Madison Square Garden and the James A. Farley Post Office (the main NYC postal facility). Photos 3 and 4 show the Amtrak and Long Island Railroad tracks that tunnel under the post office to reach Penn Station below Madison Square Garden. Photos 5 and 6 show the Long Island Railroad trainyard which stretches from 12th Avenue (at the western Hudson River side) to 10th Avenue on the east. This yard connects to the tunnel under the post office and Madison Square Garden.

8th Avenue at Madison Square Gardent will be closed to vehicle traffic during the convention and protestors barred. It is not known what convention preparations are underway in the train tunnel, although the tunnel is reported to be a very-high-hazard facility due to insufficient fire protection and safety exits. The tracks, though sunken, are accessible from surrounding streets. The temporary walkway seems architecturally vulnerable compared to the two buildings it connects. A supporting beam has sagged several inches -- see Photo 1 at left, above the ladder on its side.
