Former Intelligence Official to Head Encryption Panel

{...}

The Bureau of Export Administration last week announced
that William Crowell, former deputy director of the National
Security Agency, has been named to be chairman of the Encryption
Subcommittee of the President's Export Council.

While at the NSA, Crowell was a strong ally of Louis Freeh, the
director of the Federal Bureau of Investigation, in his fight
against attempts by the software industry to pass legislation
that would lift export controls on strong encryption.

{..}

Crowell is currently president and chief executive of Cylink Corp.,
which develops and sells network security systems. Cylink was the
first company to market a system for protecting entire networks
with public key cryptography.
