Lance Cpl. Jordan L. Chrobot, 24, of Frederick, Md., died Sept. 26 while
supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned
to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine
Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Spc. Kevin J. Graham, 27, of Benton, Ky., died Sept. 26 in Kandahar, Afghanistan,
of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his vehicle with an improvised
explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment,
5th Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Fort Lewis, Wash.
Three soldiers died Sept. 24 in Omar Zai, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered
when enemy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised explosive device.

Lance Cpl. John J. Malone, 24, of Yonkers, N.Y., died Sept. 24 while supporting
combat operations in Farah province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 2nd
Battalion, 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division, III Marine Expeditionary
Fore, based out of Marine Corps Base Hawaii, Kaneohe Bay.
Pfc. William L. Meredith, 26, of Virginia Beach, Va., died Sept. 21 in Kandahar,
Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with
an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 569th Engineer Company,
4th Engineer Battalion, Fort Carson, Colo.
Tech Sgt. James R Hornbarger, 33, of Castle Rock, Wash., died Sept. 12 as
a result of a non-hostile incident in the Mediterranean. He was assigned
to the 9th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, Beale Air Force Base, Calif.
Sgt. David A. Davis, 28, of Dalhart, Texas, died Sept. 19 at Bagram Airfield,
Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked Bagram Airfield
using indirect fire. He was assigned to the 32nd Transportation Company,
68th Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 43rd Sustainment Brigade, 4th
Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.
Two soldiers died Sept. 20 in Zabul province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained
during a vehicle rollover. The soldiers were assigned to the 2nd Battalion,
508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne
Division, Fort Bragg, N.C. Killed were:
Spc. Corey J. Kowall, 20, of Murfreesboro, Tenn.

Pfc. Jeremiah J. Monroe, 31, of Niskayuna, N.Y., died Sept. 17 in Kandahar,
Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle with
an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 7th Engineer Battalion,
10th Sustainment Brigade, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum,
N.Y.
Three soldiers died Sept. 16 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, of wounds
suffered when enemy forces attacked their vehicle Sept. 15 with an improvised
explosive device. They were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces
Group, Fort Bragg, N.C. Killed were:

Regional Medical Center in Landstuhl, Germany, from a non-combat related

Airfield, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when a military vehicle struck
him while conducting physical training. He was assigned to the 57th Expeditionary
Signal Battalion, 11th Signal Brigade, III Corps, Fort Hood, Texas.
Staff Sgt. Bryan D. Berky, 25, of Melrose, Fla., died Sept. 12 near Bala
Baluk, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained from enemy fire while supporting
combat operations. He was assigned to the 28th Civil Engineer Squadron, Ellsworth
Air Force Base, S.D.
Two soldiers died Sept. 12 in Wardak province, Afghanistan, of injuries sustained
when enemy forces attacked their vehicle with an improvised-explosive device
and small arms fire. The soldiers were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 87th
Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light
Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y. Killed were:

Pfc. Matthew M. Martinek, 20, of DeKalb, Ill., died Sept. 11 at Landstuhl

province, Afghanistan, Sept. 4 when enemy attacked his vehicle with an
improvised-explosive device followed by a rocket-propelled grenade and small
arms fire. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry
Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort
Richardson, Alaska.
Sgt. Tyler A. Juden, 23, of Winfield, Kan., died Sept. 12 in Turan, Afghanistan,
of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit using rocket-propelled
grenade and small arms fires. He was assigned to the 4th Squadron, 73rd Cavalry
Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division, Fort Bragg, N.C.
1st Lt. Tyler E. Parten, 24, of Arkansas, died Sept. 10 in Konar province,
Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using
rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire. He was assigned to the 3rd
Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division,
Fort Carson, Colo.
Lance Cpl. Christopher S. Fowlkes, 20, of Gaffney, S.C., died Sept. 10 from
wounds sustained Sept. 3 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province,
Afghanistan. He was assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion,
2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Marine Corps Base Camp
Lejeune, N.C.
Sgt. Youvert Loney, 28, of Pohnpei, Micronesia, died Sept. 5 in Abad,
Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his vehicle using
small arms and recoilless rifle fires. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion,
12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort
Carson, Colo.

Command in Afghanistan.
Capt. Joshua S. Meadows, 30, of Bastrop, Texas, died Sept. 5 while supporting
combat operations in Farah province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 1st
Marine Special Operations Battalion, Marine Corps Forces Special Operations
Command, Camp Pendleton, Calif.
Staff Sgt. Michael C. Murphrey, 25, of Snyder, Texas, died Sept. 6 in Paktika
province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his
unit with an improvised explosive device. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion,
501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th
Infantry Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.
Sgt. Randy M. Haney, 27, of Orlando, Fla., died Sept. 6 in Nangarhar,
Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit using
small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fires. He was assigned to the 4th
Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division,
Fort Carson, Colo.
2nd Lt. Darryn D. Andrews, 34, of Dallas, Texas, died Sept. 4 in Paktika
Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his
vehicle with an improvised explosive device and a rocket-propelled grenade.
He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th
Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division, Fort Richardson,
Alaska.
Lance Cpl. Christopher S. Baltazar Jr., 19, of San Antonio, Texas, died Sept.
3 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He
was assigned to 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine Division,
II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Petty Officer 3rd Class Benjamin P. Castiglione, 21, of Howell, Mich., died
Sept. 3 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
He was assigned to the 2nd Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion, 2nd Marine
Expeditionary Battalion.
Spc. Tyler R. Walshe, 21, of Shasta Calif., died Aug. 31 in southern Afghanistan,
of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his unit with an improvised

Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated

Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked his
unit using small arms and rocket-propelled grenade fires. He was assigned
to the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th
Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.
Pfc. Donald W. Vincent, 26, of Gainesville, Fla., died July 25 of wounds
sustained while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
He was assigned to 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division,
II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Lance Cpl. Jeremy S. Lasher, 27, of Oneida, N.Y., and Cpl. Nicholas G. Xiarhos,

combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. They were assigned to

Two soldiers died July 22 in Zabul Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered
when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle. They were
assigned to the 4th Engineer Battalion, Fort Carson, Colo. Killed were:

Afghanistan, of injuries sustained during a vehicle roll-over. He was assigned
to the 148th Brigade Support Battalion, Cedartown, Ga.
Four soldiers died July 20 in Wardak Province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered
when an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle followed
by an attack from enemy forces using small arms and rocket-propelled grenade
fires. They were assigned to the 4th Battalion, 25th Field Artillery (STRIKE),
3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum,
N.Y. Killed were:

was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Ga.
Two airmen died July 17 in a F-15E crash near Ghazni Province, Afghanistan.

Capt. Thomas J. Gramith, 27, of Eagan, Minn. He was assigned to the 336th
Fighter Squadron, Seymour Johnson Air Force Base, N.C.
Capt. Mark R. McDowell, 26, of Colorado Springs, Colo. He was assigned to

Sgt. 1st Class Jason J. Fabrizi, 29, of Seffner, Fla., died July 14 in Konar
province, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when his mounted patrol was attacked
by enemy forces using rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire. He was
assigned to the 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team,
4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo.
Sgt. Michael W. Heede Jr., 22, of Delta, Pa., and Staff Sgt. David S. Spicer,
33, of Zanesfield, Ohio, died July 13 while supporting combat operations
in Helmand province, Afghanistan.
Staff Sgt. Eric J. Lindstrom, 27, of Flagstaff, Ariz., died July 12 near
Barge Matal, Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when insurgents attacked his
dismounted patrol using small arms and indirect fire. He was assigned to
the 1st Battalion, 32nd Infantry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th
Mountain Division (Light Infantry), Fort Drum, N.Y.
Spc. Joshua R. Farris, 22, of La Grange, Texas, died July 9 in Wardak Province,

Lance Cpl. Roger G. Hager, 20, of Gibsonville, N.C., and Master Sgt. John

in Helmand province, Afghanistan. They were assigned to 2nd Reconnaissance

Spc. Gregory J. Missman, 36, of Batavia, Ohio, died July 9 at Bagram,
Afghanistan, of wounds suffered elsewhere in Afghanistan on July 8, when
enemy forces attacked his unit using small arms fire. He was assigned to
the 704th Brigade Support Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry
Division, Fort Carson, Colo.
Aviation Ordnanceman Airman Darren Ethan Tate, 21, of Canyon, Texas died
of non-hostile causes July 8 at Bagram Air Base in Afghanistan. He was assigned
to the USS Iwo Jima, and deployed as an Individual Augmentee to Combined
Security Transition Command - Afghanistan.
Four soldiers died July 6 in Konduz, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when
an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle. Killed were:
2nd Lt. Derwin I. Williams, 41, of Glenwood, Ill. He was assigned to the
2nd Battalion, 106th Cavalry Regiment, Dixon, Ill.
Sgt. Brock H. Chavers, 25, of Bulloch, Ga. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion,
121st Infantry Regiment, Americus, Ga.
Spc. Chester W. Hosford, 35, of Hastings, Minn. He was assigned to the 2nd
Battalion, 106th Cavalry Regiment, Dixon, Ill.
Spc. Issac L. Johnson, 24, of Columbus, Ga. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion,
108th Reconnaissance, Surveillance and Target Acquisition Squadron, Rome,
Ga.
Capt. Mark A. Garner, 30, of Elkin, N.C., died July 6 in Argandab District,
Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated
near his vehicle. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 4th Infantry Regiment,
Joint Multinational Readiness Center, Hohenfels, Germany.
Pfc. Nicolas H. J. Gideon, 20, of Murrieta, Calif., died July 6 at Forward
Operating Base Salerno, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered earlier that day
in Paktya, Afghanistan, when insurgents attacked his unit using small arms
and rocket-propelled grenade fires. He was assigned to the 1st Squadron,
40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry
Division, Fort Richardson, Alaska.
Spc. Christopher M. Talbert, 24, of Galesburg, Ill., died July 7 in Shindad,
Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated
near his vehicle. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 130th Infantry Regiment,
Marion, Ill.
Petty Officer Second Class Tony Michael Randolph, 22, of Henryetta, Okla.
died July 6 in an improvised explosive device attack on his convoy in northern
Afghanistan. Randolph was assigned to Explosive Ordnance Disposal Mobile
Unit Eight, Sigonella, Italy, and was deployed with his platoon to Joint
Task Force South conducting counter-improvised explosive device operations
in support of Task Force Zabul in Afghanistan.

fire and a rocket-propelled-grenade launcher. He was assigned to the 2nd
Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry
Division, Fort Carson, Colo.
1st Lt. Brian N. Bradshaw, 24, of Steilacoom, Wash., died June 25 in Kheyl,
Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when an improvised explosive device detonated
near his vehicle. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 501st Parachute Infantry
Regiment, 4th Airborne Brigade Combat Team, 25th Infantry Division, Fort
Richardson, Alaska.
Two soldiers died June 21 in Bagram, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when
their unit was attacked by indirect fire. Killed were:

National Guardsman assigned to the 2nd Squadron, 106th Cavalry, Aurora, IL.
Staff Sgt. Joshua A. Melton, 26, of Carlyle, IL. He was an Illinois Army
National Guardsman assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 130th Infantry, Marion,
Illinois.
Master Sgt. Kevin A. Dupont, 52, of Templeton, Mass., died June 17 at Brooke
Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, of wounds suffered March 8 in
Kandau, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated near his
vehicle. He was assigned to the 79th Troop Command, Rehoboth, Mass.
Spc. Jonathan C. O’Neill, 22, of Zephyrhills, Fla., died June 15 at
Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, of wounds suffered June
2 in Paktya, Afghanistan, when an improvised explosive device detonated near
his vehicle. He was assigned to the 549th Military Police Company, 385th
Military Police Battalion, 16th Military Police Brigade (Airborne) at Fort
Stewart, Ga.
Chief Warrant Officer 2 Ricky L. Richardson Jr., 33, of Franklin, Mo., died
June 10 while supporting combat operations in Farah province, Afghanistan.

III Marine Expeditionary Force, Okinawa, Japan.
Spc. Eduardo S. Silva, 25, of Greenfield, Calif., died June 9 at Bagram Airfield,

Aviation Support Battalion, 159th Combat Aviation Brigade, 101st Airborne
Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.
Maj. Rocco M. Barnes, 50, of Los Angeles, died June 4 in Afghanistan of injuries
sustained during a vehicle roll-over. He was a member of the Tactical Command
Post, 40th Infantry Division, California Army National Guard, assigned as
an individual augmentee to the 3rd Marine Regiment, 3rd Marine Division,
III Marine Expeditionary Force.
Spc. Roberto A. Hernandez I, 21, of Far Rockaway, N.Y., died June 2 in Paktya,
Afghanistan, of wounds sustained when his mounted patrol was attacked with
an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. He was assigned to the

1st Lt. Roslyn L. Schulte, 25, of St. Louis, Mo., died May 20 near Kabul,

Base, Hawaii.
Two soldiers died May 15 at Forward Operating Base Shank, Afghanistan, of
wounds suffered when their patrol was attacked by enemy forces using small-arms

DoD Announces Afghanistan Force Deployment
The Department of Defense announced today the deployment of approximately
4,000 additional service members to Afghanistan, pursuant to the
President’s approval of the Afghanistan-Pakistan strategic review. These
forces will be assigned to the ongoing training and mentoring mission in
Afghanistan. Approximately 3,300 soldiers from the 4th Brigade Combat Team,
82nd Airborne Division, from Fort Bragg, N.C., along with approximately 700
additional training and support personnel will deploy to Afghanistan in the
spring and through the summer of 2009, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

Capt. Brian M. Bunting, 29, of Potomac, Md. He was a member of the Individual
Ready Reserve, assigned to the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Syracuse,
N.Y.
Sgt. Schuyler B. Patch, 25, of Owasso Okla. He was assigned to the 2nd Squadron,
106th Cavalry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Kewanee, Ill.
Sgt. Scott B. Stream, 39, of Mattoon, Ill. He was assigned to the 2nd Battalion,
130th Infantry Regiment, 33rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team, Effingham, Ill.
Sgt. Daniel J. Thompson, 24, of Madison, Wis. He was a member of the Individual
Ready Reserve, assigned to the 715th Military Police Company, Melbourne,
Fla.

Two soldiers were killed:
Staff Sgt. Jeremy E. Bessa, 26, of Woodridge IL, died Feb. 20, in Khordi,
Afghanistan, when his military vehicle was struck by an improvised explosive
device followed by small arms fire attack by enemy forces.
Master Sgt. David L. Hurt, 36, of Tucson, AZ, died Feb. 20, in Kandahar,
Afghanistan, from wounds received during the same incident.
They were assigned to 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne),
Fort Bragg, N.C.
Staff Sgt. Timothy P. Davis, 28, of Aberdeen, Wash., died Feb. 20 near Bagram,
Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his vehicle encountered an improvised
explosive device. He was assigned to the 23rd Special Tactics Squadron, Hurlburt
Field, Fla.
Sgt. 1st Class Raymond J. Munden, 35, of Mesquite, Texas, died Feb. 16 at
Forward Operating Base Tillman in Paktika Province, Afghanistan, of wounds
sustained when insurgents attacked his unit using indirect fire. He was assigned
to the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st
Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky.
Staff Sgt. Daniel L. Hansen, 24, of Tracy, Calif., died Feb. 14 while supporting
combat operations in Farah province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to Marine
Wing Support Squadron 171, Marine Wing Support Group 17, 1st Marine Air Wing,
III Marine Expeditionary Force, Iwakuni, Japan.
Staff Sgt. Marc J. Small, 29, of Collegeville, Pa., died Feb. 12 at Faramuz,
Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit using a
rocket-propelled grenade launcher and small arms fire. He was assigned to
the 1st Battalion, 3rd Special Forces Group (Airborne), Fort Bragg, N.C.
Two soldiers died Feb. 10 in Salerno, Afghanistan, of injuries suffered when
an improvised explosive device detonated near their vehicle. The soldiers
were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade
Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), Fort Campbell, Ky. Killed
were:
Cpl. Peter J. Courcy, 22, of Frisco, Texas.
Pfc. Jason R. Watson, 19, of Many, La.
Lance Cpl. Kevin T. Preach, 21, of Bridgewater, Mass., died Feb. 7 from wounds
he received Jan. 24 while supporting combat operations in Farah province,
Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine
Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Lejeune, N.C.
Two soldiers died Feb. 8 in Kabul, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered from an
improvised explosive device. They were assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 130th
Infantry Regiment of Marion, Ill. Killed were:
Staff Sgt. Jason E. Burkholder, 27, of Elida, Ohio.
1st Lt. Jared W. Southworth, 26, of Oakland, Ill.
Sgt. James M. Dorsey, 23, of Beardstown, Ill., died Feb. 8 in Kamaliyah,
Iraq, in a non-combat related incident. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion,
66th Armor Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort
Hood, Texas.
